Chapter 4 - The Shadows Move

As the security detail dragged a screaming, pleading Dominic out of the boardroom, the remaining executives sat frozen in their seats, terrified to move or even breathe heavily.

Adrian stood up, his tall frame dominating the room.

"Effective immediately," Adrian announced, his voice slicing through the thick tension, "Evelyn Mercer is appointed Chief Financial Officer and Executive Vice President of Vale Meridian Group."

Evelyn looked up at him in surprise, her lips parting slightly to object, but Adrian gave her a sharp, non-negotiable look that silenced her instantly.

"She has absolute authority over all operational budgets, asset allocations, and internal security clearings," Adrian added, turning his piercing gaze onto the remaining board members. "If anyone questions her authority, attempts to bypass her audits, or fails to cooperate with her investigations... you will answer to me personally. Meeting adjourned."

The executives scrambled out of the room like rats fleeing a sinking ship, eager to get as far away from Adrian’s wrath as possible.

Once the room was clear, Evelyn stood up, hugging her thick ledger against her chest.

"Mr. Vale," she said, her tone laced with concern. "You shouldn't have done that."

"Done what?" he asked, walking around the table until he stood directly in front of her.

"Promoting me to CFO puts a massive target on my back," she explained, her voice dropping to a low whisper. "Dominic wasn't working alone. The scale of those federal treasury bond manipulations requires backing from an outside organization—most likely the Syndicate in Detroit or the Moretti family from New York. By putting me in the spotlight, you've made me their primary objective."

"You were already their target the moment you survived that fire, Evelyn," Adrian said softly, reaching out to gently touch her wrapped hand. "The only difference now is that you have the full power of this empire behind you. And you have me."

"I don't need a title to do my work," she insisted, looking up into his dark gray eyes.

"I know you don't," Adrian murmured, his face softening with an emotional warmth he rarely showed anyone. "You did it for three years without asking for a single thing in return. But I am done letting you fight my battles from the shadows, Evelyn. From this day forward, we stand together."

Before Evelyn could reply, her phone chimed with an encrypted text message from an unknown number.

She looked down at the screen. Her eyes widened.

It was an image—a high-resolution photograph taken less than five minutes ago.

It showed the grave of her late father in South Chicago, and standing beside the tombstone was a tall man in a dark trench coat, holding a single red rose.

Beneath the photo was a simple text:

Tell your new boss that some debts cannot be audited. The books close in twenty-four hours.

Evelyn felt a chill run down her spine, her breath catching in her throat.

Adrian took the phone from her hand, viewed the image, and his jaw set into a line of pure, terrifying fury.

"Marcus!" Adrian bellowed toward the door.

His chief of security rushed into the room immediately. "Yes, Boss?"

"Deploy Team One to St. Mary’s Cemetery in Southside," Adrian ordered, his voice shaking with restrained violence. "I want every camera within a ten-block radius pulled. And put a 24-hour armed perimeter around Evelyn’s apartment, her family members, and every location she has visited in the last month."

"Understood, Mr. Vale!" Marcus bowed and rushed out.

Adrian turned back to Evelyn, his hands taking her shoulders, pulling her gently against his chest. She didn't resist; she let her head rest against his lapel, inhaling the comforting scent of cedarwood, expensive tobacco, and pure strength.

"They made a mistake targeting your father, Evelyn," Adrian whispered into her hair, his arms wrapping securely around her. "They think they can use fear to break you. But they don't realize what you mean to me."
