Chapter 1 - The Broken Chain

Vivian lowered the two identical bracelets against the reinforced glass, her eyes locked on the couple from Room 312—Arthur and Linda Vance. Linda held her discharge papers tightly against her coat, while Arthur gripped the handle of an empty infant car seat.

"Why stop them?" Celeste demanded into the intercom, her fingers trembling against the plastic frame. "They were cleared for discharge thirty minutes ago!"

"They were cleared by an automated system that was compromised during the storm's power surge," Vivian’s calm voice echoed down the corridor, piercing through the low hum of the emergency backup generators. "Room 312’s baby isn't in their room. Their baby is in here. And if they step onto that elevator, they will be walking out with a child that isn't theirs."

A collective gasp rippled through the hallway. Linda Vance stopped dead in her tracks, her face draining of color. "What are you talking about? My son is in the nursery getting his hearing test!"

"Your son was in the nursery," Vivian countered. "Until someone switched his tracking bracelet at 3:15 a.m. while the system rebooted."

Nora’s breath hitched. She slammed her palm against the glass, her voice raw. "Where is Ruby? What did you do with my daughter?"

Inside, Vivian walked back toward the dark alcove behind the primary examination table. She reappeared carrying a swaddled bundle wrapped in a blue-striped blanket—not the yellow-hatted bundle Nora had watched her take hours earlier. She placed the baby gently into Bassinet Three.

"Your daughter is safe, Nora," Vivian said softly through the speaker, her eyes softening for a fleeting second as she met Nora’s panicked gaze. "She is in the isolation bassinet behind the partition, where no one can touch her until we verify every single blood type on this floor."

"You're insane!" Arthur Vance shouted, dropping the car seat with a loud plastic crash that made several mothers flinch. "You've locked up five infants because of some glitch? Call the police! Get the fire department to cut down this door!"

"Do it," Vivian said simply. "Cut the door. The moment you spark a thermal torch against this reinforced frame, the pneumatic seal will lock down the HVAC system. The air in here will be cut off in six minutes. Is that a risk you want to take with five newborns?"

Celeste turned fiercely to the security guards. "Stand down! Don't touch the door." She pressed her hands against the glass, leaning in close. "Vivian, listen to me. I've known you for twelve years. You're the most dedicated head nurse this unit has ever had. If you think there's been an baby mix-up or a security breach, let me bring in Chief Medical Officer Dr. Thorne. Let us audit the physical logs together."

"Dr. Thorne is the one who authorized the system override at 3:00 a.m.," Vivian replied coldly.

The hallway fell dead silent. Thunder cracked outside, rattling the double-paned storm windows at the end of the hall.

Nora turned to Miles, her hands clutching his arms so hard her nails bit through his shirt. "Miles... Thorne was the doctor who handled my emergency C-section. He was the one who took Ruby to the warming table immediately after she was born."

Miles’s jaw tightened. "Vivian, if Dr. Thorne compromised the system, tell us what happened. Why take off the bracelets? Why hide Ruby?"

"Because," Vivian said, pulling a glowing handheld blood scanner from her apron pocket, "the bracelets currently on these babies do not match the digital records in the hospital database. Someone didn't just mix up five babies during the power outage, Miles. Someone systematically erased the birth records of two of them. If I hadn't noticed the duplicate serial numbers on the RFID tags during my manual check, two mothers would have walked out of this hospital today raising children that weren't theirs—while two babies vanished into thin air."

Linda Vance suddenly dropped her folder. Dozens of papers scattered across the linoleum floor. She took a step back toward the elevator, her eyes darting frantically toward her husband. "Arthur... let's just go. We can come back for the baby later."

"Linda, wait," Arthur said, reaching for her arm. "What are you doing?"

Nora watched Linda’s sudden panic. Something shifted in the air—a subtle, terrifying realization. Nora stepped away from Miles, ignoring the sharp, burning sensation along her incision line. She looked at Linda, then at the scattered discharge papers on the floor, and finally at Vivian behind the glass.

"She isn't trying to leave because she's scared," Nora whispered, the truth striking her like a physical blow. "She's trying to leave because she knows."
