Chapter 8 - The Rebuilding

Two months later.

The winter snow had covered the city of New Haven in a pristine white blanket.

In a small, newly renovated commercial building near the university medical campus, a bright blue sign was being mounted above the entrance: The Cross Infant Advocacy & Safety Center.

Inside, the warm lobby was filled with the smell of fresh paint and lavender oil. Soft armchairs lined the waiting area, and colorful artwork hung on the walls.

Vivian Cross stood behind the reception desk, organizing a stack of educational brochures on infant tracking safety and parental rights.

The front door opened with a cheerful chime, letting in a gust of crisp winter air along with Nora, Miles, and four-month-old Ruby, who was bundled up in a fluffy pink snowsuit that made her look like a tiny bear.

"Look who's here!" Vivian smiled warmly, coming out from behind the desk to greet them.

"Congratulations, Vivian!" Nora said, hugging her tightly before handing her a gift basket filled with organic teas and baked goods. "It looks incredible in here!"

"It still feels surreal," Vivian admitted, looking around the bright office space. "When Arthur Vance offered to fully fund the foundation, I thought he was just acting out of guilt. But he’s really committed to reforming pediatric security protocols across the entire state."

"He needed a way to turn his grief into something meaningful," Miles noted, taking off his gloves. "How is he doing?"

"He's doing better," Vivian said. "He’s established a trust fund for Paige’s son, ensuring the boy will be cared for by his adoptive family with full educational support. Arthur comes by once a week to help with our legal aid department."

Ruby let out a loud, happy squeak from inside her snowsuit, waving her tiny mitten-covered hands.

Vivian carefully unzipped the snowsuit, scooping Ruby up into her arms. Ruby instantly reached out, grabbing Vivian’s silver necklace with her chubby little fingers, giggling softly.

"She remembers her favorite nurse," Nora smiled, her heart swelling with contentment.

"She’s growing so fast," Vivian murmured, holding the baby close. "Her chest sounds clear, her eyes are bright. She's thriving, Nora."

"We owe that to you," Nora said softly. "Every single day when I wake up and hear her breathing over the monitor, I think of you behind that glass wall, holding the line for us."

"We all held the line that night," Vivian said, looking at Nora and Miles with deep, affection. "We just needed a little light to see our way through."
