Chapter 10 - The Light Beyond the Glass (Conclusion)

Five years later.
The summer sun shone brightly over the backyard of the West Hartford house.
A large wooden playhouse sat near the oak tree, decorated with handmade flower garlands. A picnic table was laden with birthday presents, juice boxes, and a grand, two-tiered vanilla cake topped with five lit candles.
A group of neighborhood children were playing tag on the lawn, their laughter echoing through the warm summer air.
In the center of the crowd, running as fast as her little legs could carry her, was Ruby. She was a radiant five-year-old girl with sparkling brown eyes, wearing a yellow sundress that matched the color of the little knitted hat her mother had made for her years ago.
"You can't catch me, Daddy!" Ruby giggled, dodging around the oak tree as Miles chased after her, roaring playfully like a monster.
"Oh, I'm gonna catch the birthday girl!" Miles laughed, swooping down and lifting her high into his arms, spinning her around until she squealed with delight.
Nora stood near the patio table, watching them with a glowing smile. She was holding a bundle in her arms—a healthy, two-month-old baby boy named Leo, fast asleep against her chest.
A soft car door shut in the driveway.
Vivian Cross walked into the backyard, carrying a wrapped gift box topped with a bright pink bow. She looked elegant, happy, and remarkably relaxed. Behind her walked Celeste, now retired, carrying a tray of fresh lemonade.
"Aunt Vivian!" Ruby shouted, wriggling out of Miles’s arms the moment her feet touched the grass. She sprinted across the lawn, throwing her arms around Vivian’s knees.
"Happy fifth birthday, my brave girl!" Vivian laughed, kneeling down to wrap Ruby in a warm hug, kissing her cheek. "Look at how big you are!"
"Look at my dress!" Ruby said proudly, twirling around. "Mommy said yellow is my lucky color!"
Vivian looked up at Nora, her eyes shimmering with tender emotion. "Yellow suits her perfectly."
Vivian walked over to Nora, gently peeking under the soft blanket at sleeping baby Leo. "He’s beautiful, Nora. Absolutely perfect."
"He has his sister's strong lungs," Nora joked, leaning in to hug Vivian. "Thank you for coming, Vivian. It wouldn't be a real celebration without you."
"I wouldn't miss it for the world," Vivian said softly.
As the afternoon dissolved into a golden evening, the guests gathered around the outdoor table. Miles lit the five candles on the cake once more as the sun began to dip below the tree line, painting the sky in vibrant shades of rose, orange, and gold.
"Alright, Ruby," Miles called out, holding Nora's hand tightly as she held baby Leo close. "Make a big wish!"
Ruby stood on a wooden step stool beside the table—the very same stool Nora had bought for her to reach the kitchen counter. She looked around at the circle of people surrounding her: her mother, her father, her baby brother, her favorite Nurse Vivian, and all the friends who loved her.
Ruby took a deep breath, closed her eyes tight, and blew out all five candles in one single breath.
Everyone cheered, clapping and throwing confetti into the air.
Nora looked across the table at Vivian, who was smiling radiant in the golden twilight.

There were no locks on the doors. No dark monitors, no flashing red alarms, no glass dividing them from the ones they loved.
The dark night was long gone, replaced forever by the boundless warmth of life, family, and a light that would never go out.
