Chapter 2 - The Shadow in the Records

Linda Vance lunged for the elevator call button, her fingers smashing against the illuminated down arrow.

"Stop her!" Nora screamed.

Miles didn't hesitate. He crossed the corridor in three strides, planting himself between Linda and the elevator doors. Security Officer Ramsey grabbed Linda by the arms, holding her back as she began to thrash wildly.

"Let me go!" Linda shrieked, her voice echoing violently down the quiet maternity ward. "You have no right to detain us! My husband is an attorney!"

"Shut up, Linda!" Arthur snapped, his face flushed with confusion and rising anger. He looked at the guards, then at his wife. "Linda, what is going on? Why are you acting like this?"

"Because she isn't your wife, Arthur," Vivian’s voice came coldly through the intercom.

Everyone froze.

Vivian held up a laminated printout against the glass panel. It was a mugshot, taken three years ago, showing a woman with dark hair and severe features—strikingly similar to Linda, but with distinct facial scars along her jawline.

"Her real name is Karen Vance—Arthur’s sister-in-law," Vivian explained, her steady gaze fixed on the trembling woman. "Arthur, your real wife, Linda, passed away six months ago from severe heart complications during her second trimester. You were told the fetus didn't survive. But Karen and Dr. Thorne kept that record buried in the private surgical wing of St. Jude’s Private Clinic."

Arthur stumbled backward, his back hitting the wall. "What... what are you talking about? Linda is right here! She's been in recovery for two days!"

"Look at her wrist, Arthur," Vivian commanded. "Does she have a maternal hospital band?"

Arthur stared at the woman he believed was his wife. Slowly, reluctantly, he reached out and pulled back the sleeve of her yellow coat. Her wrist was bare. No pink plastic hospital ID tag. No allergy warnings. Nothing.

"She replaced your wife months ago when you were out of the country on business," Vivian said, her tone dripping with tragic pity. "They used your wealth and your grief to execute a private surrogacy scheme. Dr. Thorne forged the delivery paperwork using a surrogate brought into this hospital under a false name last night."

Nora’s mind raced. Seven lost pregnancies. Seven years of heartbreak. She remembered the strange delay right after Ruby was delivered—how Dr. Thorne had insisted on taking the baby to the side table for "respiratory clearing" before letting Nora hold her.

"The surrogate," Nora breathed, her voice trembling as she looked at Vivian through the glass. "Who was the surrogate?"

Vivian didn't answer immediately. She walked to the back of the nursery and returned with a heavy black binder. She held a page against the glass.

"The surrogate was Paige Ward," Vivian said quietly.

Nora turned in horror to look down the hallway.

Paige, the sweet, twenty-four-year-old junior nurse who had held Nora’s hand through twelve hours of agonizing labor, was standing near the nurse's station. Tears were streaming down her face.

Celeste Ward looked at Paige, her eyes widening in absolute disbelief. "Paige... no. You're my niece. You told me you were taking a sabbatical in Europe last year..."

"I... I didn't have a choice, Aunt Celeste," Paige sobbed, sinking to her knees on the hard floor. "I owed hundreds of thousands in medical debt from my mother's cancer treatment. Dr. Thorne promised he would wipe the debt completely. All I had to do was carry the baby to term and let him swap the birth certificates at delivery."

"Swap it with who?!" Nora screamed, lunging toward Paige, only for Miles to catch her around the waist. "With WHO, Paige?!"

Paige looked up through her tears, her voice barely a whisper. "With yours, Nora. He was going to give your baby to Arthur Vance."
