Chapter 6 - The Paper Trail

By sunrise, the storm had passed, leaving behind a clear, crisp blue sky over the Connecticut shoreline.

Emergency power had been fully restored to St. Jude’s Hospital. The maternity ward was bathed in warm, artificial light, filled with the bustling presence of state police investigators, hospital administrators, and social services representatives.

Nora sat in a comfortable armchair in her private recovery room, Room 304. She had refused to let go of Ruby for even a second. The baby was dressed in a soft pink onesie, sound asleep against Nora's chest, her tiny heart beating steadily against her mother's.

Miles returned to the room carrying two paper cups of warm tea. He handed one to Nora and kissed the top of her head.

"How are you feeling?" he asked softly.

"Like I've lived ten years in one night," Nora said, offering a faint, weary smile. "Has there been any word on what happens next?"

"The state attorney general has taken over the investigation," Miles said, sitting on the arm of her chair. "Thorne's private accounts were frozen two hours ago. They found offshore transfers dating back five years. He wasn't just doing this here—he had a network involving private clinics across three states."

A quiet knock at the door drew their attention.

Vivian Cross stepped inside. She was no longer wearing her navy scrubs, but a simple wool sweater and dark jeans. Her face showed deep lines of exhaustion, but her eyes were serene.

"May I come in?" she asked gently.

"Please," Nora said immediately, gesturing for her to enter.

Vivian walked over to the side of the chair, looking down at sleeping Ruby. A rare, gentle smile touched her lips. "Her oxygen saturation and blood work came back perfect. She’s a tough little girl, Nora."

"She gets it from her mother," Miles smiled, reaching out to grasp Vivian’s hand. "Vivian... we don't even know how to thank you. If you hadn't risked your job—your freedom—to lock down that nursery..."

"I didn't risk my job, Miles," Vivian said softly. "I did my job. Twelve years ago, when I took the oath as a pediatric nurse, I promised to protect the most vulnerable. Last night, those five babies were the only thing that mattered."

Nora reached out, clutching Vivian's arm. "What will happen to you? Celeste said the board is upset about you disabling the security system."

Vivian gave a soft, dry laugh. "The board is currently trying to minimize a massive public relations disaster. They offered me an administrative suspension with pay, but I handed in my resignation an hour ago."

Nora’s eyes widened. "You resigned?"

"This hospital needs a clean slate," Vivian explained quietly. "And honestly... I think I'm ready for a change. But before I left, I wanted to make sure you had this."

Vivian pulled an official leather-bound folder from under her arm and handed it to Nora.

Nora opened it. Inside was Ruby’s official birth certificate, bearing Nora and Miles’s names, signed by the head of pediatrics, along with a certified physical footprint card stamped in dark blue ink.

"It's complete," Vivian said. "No dark servers, no altered records. She's officially yours in every corner of the world."

Tears welling in her eyes, Nora touched the tiny blue footprint on the paper. "Thank you, Vivian."

"What about Paige’s baby?" Miles asked quietly. "The fifth infant?"

Vivian’s expression softened with a touch of sadness. "Paige is in state custody, but she signed a full confession that helped clear the other families. Social Services has placed her baby boy in temporary emergency foster care with a wonderful family in Greenwich while her legal team works out a plea agreement."

Vivian reached into her bag and pulled out a small, silver baby rattle, placing it gently on the table beside Nora. "A gift for Ruby. From someone who knew she was special the moment she arrived."
