Chapter 10 - The Quiet Sunday

Spring returned to the hills outside Nashville one year after that fateful Easter Sunday.

The air was warm and sweet, filled with the scent of blooming dogwood blossoms and fresh rosemary.

Inside the quiet kitchen of Richard’s house, the oven timer rang with a cheerful ding!

Richard Hayes—looking younger, relaxed, and deeply at peace—stepped over to the oven, wearing a simple cotton apron. He pulled out a perfectly roasted honey-glazed ham, setting it onto the wooden counter beside a dish of golden roasted rosemary potatoes and a fresh pot of coffee.

Warm spring air drifted through the open windows.

Birds were singing in the oak trees outside.

Richard walked over to the kitchen table and looked at his phone.

It was exactly 1:04 p.m.

A sudden rumble of tires sounded on the gravel driveway outside.

Richard walked to the front door, stepping out onto the spacious wooden porch.

A sleek blue sedan pulled up near the house. The driver’s door opened, and Emily stepped out, wearing a bright yellow spring dress, her hair blowing gently in the warm breeze.

Behind her, Tom Vance and his wife stepped out of their truck, carrying a homemade peach cobbler, laughing and chatting in the sunshine.

"Dad!" Emily called out, holding up a bouquet of fresh spring flowers as she walked up the porch steps. "Sorry we’re late! The traffic on Highway 70 was terrible!"

Richard walked down the porch steps, wrapping his daughter in a tight, warm, loving embrace.

"You're right on time, sweetheart," Richard whispered, kissing her cheek.

Emily pulled back, looking at her father with a playful, radiant grin. "Smells incredible out here. Did you save me the end piece of the ham?"

"Always," Richard smiled, putting his arm around her shoulders as they walked up the steps together. "Always."

They stepped into the warm, sunlit house, leaving the front door wide open to let in the spring air, the sound of laughter, and the sweet, peaceful music of a home that was finally safe.
