Chapter 3 - The Aftermath in the Living Room

"Dad..."

The quiet, broken whisper made Richard’s heart stop.

He kept Ethan pinned to the floor with one arm while reaching into his pocket with the other, pulling out a set of heavy plastic zip-ties he had grabbed from his truck. He bound Ethan’s wrists tightly behind his back, ensuring the arrogant man couldn't move an inch.

"Stay down," Richard ordered coldly.

Ethan spat blood onto the white marble floor, glaring up at Richard with pure hatred. "You're dead, Hayes! You hear me?! My lawyers will destroy you! I own the police chief! I own this town!"

Richard ignored him completely. He turned away and dropped to his knees beside Emily.

"Emily... Oh, baby," Richard murmured, his voice trembling as the soldier gave way to the father.

He gently reached out, his calloused hands cradling her face with delicate care.

Emily winced, but when her swollen eyes recognized her father, a flood of hysterical, desperate tears burst from her eyes. She reached out, clinging to his leather jacket with all her remaining strength, burying her face into his chest.

"I’m sorry, Dad... I’m so sorry... I tried to make it work... I tried..." she sobbed, her whole body shaking violently.

"Shh. Don't you dare apologize, Emily," Richard whispered, kissing the top of her bloody head. "You did nothing wrong. It’s over. I’ve got you. Nobody is ever going to touch you again."

He quickly evaluated her injuries with trained medical precision:

Laceration on the right forehead (bleeding, requires sutures).

Severe bruising on her left wrist and forearm (possible defensive fracture).

Guarding her chest (likely cracked or broken ribs).

Bruising around her neck (strangulation marks).

A deep, dark rage burned in Richard’s chest, but he forced it down, focusing entirely on keeping Emily calm.

Outside, the distant wail of police sirens and ambulance horns began to grow louder, cutting through the quiet neighborhood.

Ethan, still bound on the floor, began to laugh—a dry, bitter, psychotic sound.

"Listen to those sirens, old man!" Ethan sneered, his voice raspy against the floor. "You think they're coming to save you? I donate millions to the police department foundation! The Chief of Police plays golf at my country club every Saturday! When they walk through that door, they’re going to see an unhinged veteran who rammed my gate, broke my doors, and assaulted a prominent businessman in his own home!"

Richard looked over at Ethan, his face completely devoid of fear.

"Let them come, Ethan," Richard said softly. "Let the whole world come."

Three police cruisers and an advanced ambulance pulled onto the estate grounds, tires screeching over the broken iron gate. Armed officers spilled out onto the lawn, weapons drawn, shouting as they approached the shattered glass patio doors.

"NYPD—I mean, Belle Meade Police! Drop your weapons! Hands where we can see them!" two officers shouted, stepping through the shattered glass frame with handguns drawn.

Richard raised his hands slowly, keeping his body positioned protectively in front of Emily.

"I am Colonel Richard Hayes, retired United States Army," Richard stated calmly and loudly. "The suspect, Ethan Caldwell, is zip-tied on the floor. He has been subdued following a violent domestic assault. My daughter requires immediate medical assistance."

The lead officer looked at Ethan on the floor, then looked at Emily’s battered face, and finally at the shattered fireplace poker lying nearby.

The officer lowered his weapon slightly, gesturing to the paramedics behind him. "Medics! In here now!"

As the paramedics rushed forward with a stretcher, Ethan lifted his face, shouting hysterically at the police officers. "Officer! Arrest that man! He broke into my home! He attacked me! I want him charged with attempted murder!"

The lead officer looked down at Ethan, then looked at the severe strangulation marks on Emily’s neck.

"Shut up, Mr. Caldwell," the officer said quietly. "We're going to sort this out right now."
