Chapter 7 - The Unraveling

The giant projection screen flared to life.

High-definition video—recorded directly from Richard’s body-worn camera and the internal security feeds from 1400 Laurel Crest Lane—filled the screen in vivid, terrifying color.

The entire ballroom gasped in collective shock.

On the screen, Ethan Caldwell was clearly visible holding the brass fireplace poker, screaming abuse at Emily while she cowered bloodied on the floor. The audio echoed through the ballroom speakers with crystalline clarity:

“Get up! Get up and fix this, you stupid bitch! You think your wash-out father is going to save you?!”

Then came the sound of the glass shattering, Richard’s entrance, and Ethan’s immediate, cowardly drop of the weapon as Richard subdued him in seconds.

"Turn it off! TURN IT OFF!" Ethan screamed, rushing toward the AV equipment, his face distorted with terrifying rage.

"Do not touch that equipment, Mr. Caldwell!" an FBI special agent barked, stepping up onto the stage, unholstering his badge.

The reporters were in an absolute frenzy. Camera flashes were blinding. News anchors were doing live commentary into their microphones, broadcasting the raw footage across national news networks.

"That's not all, Ethan," David Stern declared, stepping up to the podium and placing a thick stack of federal indictment papers on the desk. "Ten minutes ago, the Securities and Exchange Commission, in conjunction with the FBI, froze all personal and corporate assets belonging to Caldwell Cybersecurity Solutions."

Ethan stumbled backward, gripping the edge of the wooden podium, his knuckles turning white. "What... what are you talking about?!"

"We hold six years of encrypted server logs proving you misused government cybersecurity grants, falsified corporate earnings to investors, and operated an illegal domestic surveillance network targeting private citizens," the Lead FBI Agent stated sternly. "Ethan Caldwell, you are under arrest for federal wire fraud, money laundering, illegal wiretapping, and federal civil rights violations."

Ethan looked around the room in absolute, desperate horror.

His attorney, Pendelton, slowly packed up his leather briefcase, stepped away from Ethan, and whispered, "I am stepping down as your counsel, Ethan. You're on your own."

"Pendelton! You can't leave me! I paid you!" Ethan screamed, grabbing his lawyer’s arm.

"With frozen funds?" Pendelton sneered, pulling his arm away and walking off the stage.

The FBI agents stepped forward, grabbing Ethan’s arms, pulling them behind his back, and snapping heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists—this time, with no bail option, under federal authority.

As the agents paraded a humiliated, screaming Ethan Caldwell past the gauntlet of flashing news cameras down the center aisle, Richard stood motionless by the door.

Ethan stopped directly in front of Richard, his face twisted in desperate, pathetic fury.

"You ruined me!" Ethan spat, tears of rage spilling down his face. "You destroyed everything I built!"

Richard looked down at Ethan Caldwell with quiet, unwavering pity.

"You destroyed yourself the moment you laid a hand on my daughter," Richard said softly. "Take him away."
