Chapter 6 - The Trap at the Hermitage

At 10:00 a.m. on Monday morning, the grand ballroom of the Hermitage Hotel was packed with over fifty journalists, news anchors, and camera crews from across Tennessee.

At the main podium stood Ethan Caldwell.

He was wearing a perfectly tailored navy suit, his hair neatly combed, a small piece of flesh-colored bandage covering a slight bruise on his jaw. Beside him stood his lead defense attorney, Arthur Pendelton—a famed criminal attorney known for getting wealthy clients off the hook.

Ethan put on his most remorseful, deeply concerned face, looking directly into the flashing news cameras.

"Thank you all for coming," Ethan began, his voice filled with practiced warmth and sadness. "Yesterday was a tragic day for my family. My beloved wife, Emily, experienced a severe mental health crisis brought on by stress and exhaustion. While I was attempting to comfort her and secure professional medical help, her father, Mr. Richard Hayes—a man with a documented history of military aggression—forced his way into my home, destroyed my property, and physically assaulted me."

The room buzzed with whispering reporters. Camera shutters clicked frantically.

"I love my wife," Ethan continued, placing a hand over his heart, his voice trembling with fake emotion. "I pray for her recovery every single day. I do not hold malice toward my father-in-law, but we must allow the justice system to hold him accountable for his violent actions—"

CLAP. CLAP. CLAP.

A slow, loud, rhythmic clapping sound echoed from the back of the ballroom.

The room went dead silent. Cameras spun around toward the main entrance doors.

Standing in the doorway was Colonel Richard Hayes.

He was wearing his dark dress uniform—pristine, crisp, with full military decorations and ribbons pinned across his chest, including the Silver Star and the Legion of Merit. His posture was military perfect, his graying hair combed back, his presence commanding absolute authority.

Beside him stood David Stern, carrying a leather briefcase, and Detective Sarah Vance accompanied by four armed Federal agents from the FBI’s Financial Crimes Division.

Ethan’s face went instantly pale. The fake remorse vanished, replaced by a flash of panic.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Ethan’s attorney, Pendelton, shouted into the microphone. "Security! Remove this man! He has a restraining order—"

"I suggest you check your phone, Mr. Pendelton," David Stern said loudly, his voice carrying over the sound of the clicking cameras as he stepped down the center aisle. "An emergency federal injunction was signed thirty minutes ago by Judge Robert Vance of the U.S. District Court, nullifying all temporary state orders against Colonel Hayes."

Richard walked down the center aisle of the ballroom, his eyes locked onto Ethan Caldwell like a predator closing in on its prey.

The reporters parted like the Red Sea, pointing microphones and cameras at Richard.

"Ethan Caldwell," Richard’s voice boomed through the ballroom, completely overpowering the audio speakers. "You told the press that Emily had a mental health crisis yesterday. You told them I attacked you without provocation."

Richard reached into his jacket pocket, pulled out a small remote control, and pointed it at the massive 100-inch projection screen hanging behind Ethan’s podium.
