Chapter 5 - The War Room

By midnight, Emily had been officially discharged from the hospital under Richard’s care.
Instead of returning to her ruined house or Richard’s quiet cabin outside Nashville, Richard drove her straight to a secure, private location: a gated farm property owned by Thomas "Tom" Vance—a retired Army Special Forces Master Sergeant who had served alongside Richard in Iraq and Afghanistan for eight years.
Tom’s property was fortified, isolated, and completely off the grid.
As Emily slept peacefully in a guest room upstairs, heavily guarded by Tom’s two trained Belgian Malinois security dogs, Richard sat in the basement study—a room that had been transformed into a tactical command center.
On the large wooden table lay printed floor plans of Ethan’s estate, financial documents, copies of the police reports, and two laptops connected to encrypted satellite networks.
Sitting around the table were three men:
Colonel Richard Hayes – The Strategist.
Tom Vance – The Security Specialist.
David Stern – A high-powered, brilliant trial attorney and former military JAG officer who had flown in from Washington D.C. on Richard’s private request.
David Stern tossed a thick folder onto the table. "Ethan’s legal team filed for emergency bail three hours ago. The judge granted a half-million-dollar bond. Ethan walked out of the Davidson County jail twenty minutes ago."
Richard didn't flinch. He took a sip of black coffee. "I expected as much. A man with fifty million dollars doesn't stay in a county jail overnight for a domestic charge."
"Where is he now?" Tom asked, zooming in on a satellite map on his laptop.
"His lawyers drove him straight to the Hermitage Grand Hotel downtown," David replied. "He’s staying in the Presidential Suite. He’s already retained a crisis PR firm. By tomorrow morning, Ethan’s media team will launch a campaign painting Emily as mentally unstable, claiming she had a severe nervous breakdown and that Richard attacked Ethan in an unprovoked vigilante raid."
Richard leaned forward, resting his elbows on the table, his fingers interlaced.
"He wants to fight this in the media and the courtroom simultaneously," Richard said coldly. "Ethan’s strength is his public image and his financial empire, Caldwell Cybersecurity Solutions. If we cut his legs out from under him, his lawyers won't have a platform to stand on."
"How do you propose we do that, Colonel?" David asked, leaning back in his chair.
Richard pulled out a small black USB flash drive from his pocket, laying it gently on the wooden table.
"Ethan thinks he’s a genius because he owns a cybersecurity firm," Richard said softly. "What he forgot is that three years ago, when he was courting Emily, he asked me to consult on his company’s government defense contract proposals. He gave me network access credentials to verify his security compliance."
Tom grinned, his dark eyes lighting up. "You still have the back-door credentials?"
"I never throw away access keys, Tom," Richard said. "Inside this drive lies six years of Ethan Caldwell’s internal corporate communications, hidden off-shore accounts, and private surveillance logs he kept on his own employees and his wife."
David Stern stared at the USB drive in disbelief. "Richard... if what’s on this drive proves financial fraud or illegal surveillance..."
"It proves he’s been embezzling client funds to keep his company afloat while blackmailing local officials to secure municipal contracts," Richard stated with absolute precision. "Ethan Caldwell isn't just a domestic abuser, David. He’s a fraud, a sociopath, and a felon."

Richard stood up, looking at the two men.
"Tomorrow morning, Ethan Caldwell holds his grand press conference at the Hermitage Hotel to clear his name," Richard said, his voice echoing through the basement room. "We are going to give him the audience he deserves."
