Chapter 4 - The Hospital of Broken Promises

The public charity clinic on Calle Victoria was a nightmare of crowded corridors, peeling linoleum, and flickering fluorescent lights. The air smelled strongly of disinfectant and copper. Dozens of sick, impoverished people rested on plastic chairs or directly on the cold floor, waiting hours just to be seen by a doctor.

Alejandro stormed through the double doors, flanked by his private security detail. Nurses and orderly staff shrank back as the wealthy businessman slammed his hands onto the front reception desk.

“Lucía Robles,” Alejandro demanded, his voice echoic and commandingly sharp. “She was brought in by ambulance an hour ago. Where is she?”

A tired nurse looked up from a stack of paper files. “Señor, you can’t just yell here. We have a queue—”

“Listen to me very carefully,” Alejandro interrupted, leaning in, his gaze burning with unstoppable resolve. “My name is Alejandro Robles. I own Robles Construction. I will buy this entire hospital and replace every piece of equipment in it tonight if you tell me where my wife is right now. Where is she?”

The nurse blinked, intimidated by his raw authority, and rapidly searched through her clipboard. “Room 104… Ward C. But sir, she is very unstable—”

Alejandro didn't wait for her to finish. He sprinted down the corridor, his heavy steps echoing loudly, until he reached Ward C.

Inside Room 104, behind a faded green curtain, lay Lucía.

She was devastatingly thin. The vibrant, laughing woman Alejandro had loved was reduced to a fragile shadow. Her cheekbones were sharp, her skin deathly pale, and dark hollows sat beneath her closed eyes. An oxygen mask covered her mouth, fogging up with every labored, shallow breath she drew. An IV line ran into her bruised wrist.

Alejandro stopped cold in the doorway. His throat tightened so violently he could hardly breathe.

“Lucía…” he whispered.

He moved to her bedside and fell to his knees on the concrete floor. He reached out with trembling, powerful hands and gently encased her frail, icy hand in his own.

“Lucía… I’m here. God forgive me, I’m here.”

As if hearing his voice through the deep fog of her fever, Lucía’s eyelids fluttered open slowly. Her dark, brown eyes—once full of bright life—were now unfocused and glassy. She looked down at him, her chest heaving under the thin white hospital sheet.

“Alejandro…?” she breathed faintly into the plastic mask. Her voice was barely a raspy wind. “Am I… am I dreaming again?”

“No, my love. It’s not a dream,” Alejandro sobbed, dropping his head onto the side of her bed, pressing her limp hand against his cheek. “I found Sofía. I found you. I know everything. I know what my mother did.”

Lucía’s eyes filled with tears that spilled over her pale cheeks, slipping down beneath the mask. “She told me… she said if I ever came near you… she would use her money to frame you for fraud… she said she would destroy your life work and take Sofía away forever into an orphanage…”

Alejandro’s blood turned to liquid fire. “She lied to you. She lied to both of us.”

A doctor rushed into the cubicle, holding a clipboard. “Señor, you cannot be in here. This patient is suffering from acute malnutrition, severe double pneumonia, and stage-two physical exhaustion. Her organs are under extreme distress.”

Alejandro stood up, turning to the doctor with total authority. “Prepare her for transport immediately.”

May you like

“Transport? She cannot be moved! We don’t have the medical authorization—”

“I am moving her to Hospital Ángeles, the best private medical center in Mexico,” Alejandro stated flatly, grabbing his phone. “My personal medical team and an intensive-care mobile unit will be outside in ten minutes. If anyone attempts to stand in my way, I will hold this facility personally and legally responsible for any harm that comes to my wife.”
