Chapter 5 - Eyes Opened in the Dark

Three days later.
The VIP private suit on the top floor of Hospital Ángeles looked more like a five-star hotel room than a medical facility. Soft sunlight poured through floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city skyline. Fresh white lilies filled the vases on the tables, filling the room with a gentle fragrance.
Lucía rested against soft down pillows, connected to state-of-the-art monitoring equipment. Her skin was no longer deathly gray; color had slowly returned to her face thanks to continuous intravenous nutrition, strong antibiotics, and world-class medical care.
Beside her bed, Sofía was fast asleep on a plush velvet sofa, holding a giant teddy bear that Alejandro had bought her.
Alejandro sat in a leather armchair beside Lucía’s bed, watching her attentively. He hadn't slept or changed his clothes in three days. He had set up his corporate operations directly from the hospital room, issuing orders that were currently dismantling Doña Teresa’s influence piece by piece.
Lucía stirred, opening her eyes. She turned her head and met Alejandro’s intense, loving gaze.
“You haven’t slept,” Lucía whispered, her voice much clearer and stronger now.
Alejandro reached over, gently smoothing a lock of dark hair away from her forehead. “I slept for three years while you were suffering, Lucía. I’m never closing my eyes again if it means losing sight of you.”
Lucía looked down at her clean, soft hands, then across the room at their sleeping daughter. “I thought you hated me, Alejandro. When those guards threw us out of the house that morning… when your mother handed me that paper saying you signed a full annulment and didn't want a poor girl dragging down your reputation…”
“I never signed anything,” Alejandro said softly, holding her hand firmly. “She forged my signature. She forged your letter to me. She intercepted every phone call. Every monthly check I sent for three years was deposited into a shell company controlled by her lawyer, Raúl Garza.”
Lucía gasped, her eyes widening. “Raúl Garza? He came to my room in La Merced two years ago. He told me that if I ever stepped foot in the Reforma district, he would ensure Sofía was taken by social services.”
Alejandro’s eyes turned pitch black with fury, but his hands remained tender as he held Lucía’s fingers. “Raúl Garza… My mother’s personal attorney.”
“Alejandro,” Lucía pleaded, her voice trembling with anxiety. “Your mother is powerful. She knows everyone in high society, the judges, the politicians. She will fight you. She will try to ruin you before she lets you bring us back.”

Alejandro leaned in, pressing a soft, lingering kiss onto Lucía’s forehead.
“Let her try,” Alejandro whispered against her skin. “She built an empire of lies, Lucía. And I am going to burn it to the ground.”
