Chapter 9 - Reckoning and Redemption

Two weeks later.
The high-security women’s detention center on the outskirts of the city was cold, gray, and silent.
Doña Teresa Robles sat behind a reinforced glass window in a orange prison jumpsuit. Her styled hair was messy, her face looked tired and aged by ten years, and her pristine nails were bitten raw.
The door opened, and Alejandro walked in. He wore a clean dark coat, looking calm, grounded, and at peace. He sat down on the metal stool on the other side of the glass, picking up the black telephone handset.
Teresa hurriedly grabbed her handset, her eyes wide with desperate hope.
“Alejandro! Thank God you came!” she pleaded, her voice cracking through the speaker. “The lawyers say I’m facing twenty years without parole! The food here is unpalatable! The women are violent! You have to drop the charges! You have the power to stop the prosecutor!”
Alejandro looked at her silently for a long moment.
“I didn't come here to talk about your charges, Teresa,” Alejandro said softly. “The legal system will deal with you, Garza, and Navarro. You will serve every single year of your sentence.”
Teresa’s eyes filled with bitter anger. “How can you be so heartless? I raised you! I gave you everything!”
“You gave me money and pride,” Alejandro corrected her gently. “But you took away my humanity. You tried to kill the woman I love and destroy the innocent child who carries my blood. You didn't do it for me. You did it for your own control and greed.”
Teresa slammed her hand against the glass screen. “That girl was a nobody! She was a poor peasant!”
“She is my wife,” Alejandro stated firmly, his voice filled with unbreakable pride. “She has more strength, grace, and dignity in her small finger than you ever possessed in your entire life of luxury.”
Teresa gasped, falling back into her chair, realizing finally that her power over her son was completely, permanently dead.
“I came here to tell you one last thing,” Alejandro continued calmly. “I have sold the family mansion in La Reforma. Every cent from the sale, along with the forty million dollars recovered from your offshore accounts, has been placed into a charitable foundation.”
Teresa glared at him, terrified. “What foundation?”
“The Lucía & Sofía Robles Foundation for Impoverished Mothers and Children,” Alejandro answered with a subtle, proud smile. “It will provide clean housing, medical care, and warm food to thousands of poor mothers living in La Merced and across the city. The very people you looked down upon will be saved by your stolen wealth.”
Teresa looked at him in absolute shock, her mouth open, unable to speak a single word.

“Goodbye, Teresa,” Alejandro said.
He hung up the phone, stood up, and walked out of the visitation room into the bright daylight, never looking back.
