Chapter 1 - The Paper Shield

The silence in the grand ballroom was absolute, heavy enough to suffocate. Vanessa’s fingers, manicured to a sharp, porcelain white, began to tremble. The auburn wig she had been holding high like a trophy slipped from her grip, hitting the polished floor with a soft, pathetic thud.
"What is this?" she whispered, her voice cracking, stripped of the amplified confidence the microphone had just given her. "Martin... what did you do?"
"I didn't do anything, Vanessa," I said, my voice echoing off the high ceilings. "You did this to yourself."
Caleb finally broke out of his trance. He snatched the document from his new wife’s hands, his eyes racing across the lines of text. I watched his face transition from confusion to absolute horror.
"Dad," Caleb’s voice was hollow, pleading. "This... this is a fraud lawsuit. Against Vanessa's boutique? And... Linda?"
Linda, Vanessa's mother, pushed her way through the floral arrangements, her silk dress rustling aggressively. "What nonsense is this? Martin, you are ruining my daughter's wedding! Security! Get this man out of here!"
"The hotel belongs to my old college roommate, Linda," I said coldly, adjusting the jacket around Evelyn’s shaking shoulders. She was leaning against me now, her breathing shallow but steadying as she realized she wasn't the one under scrutiny anymore. "The security guards aren't going to touch me. But the process server standing by the main exit is definitely going to touch you."
A man in a plain grey suit stepped forward from the back of the room, holding two more identical envelopes.
"Vanessa Sterling and Linda Sterling," the man announced clearly. "You are officially served."
The crowd erupted into frantic whispers. Aunt Denise’s fork clattered against her plate. Vanessa looked at the paper, then at me, her eyes widening with a mixture of rage and terror.
"You think you can scare us with some fake legal garbage?" Linda hissed, grabbing her daughter's arm. "Vanessa’s boutique is highly successful! We don't owe anyone anything!"
"Your boutique, Aura Couture, is a shell company, Linda," I replied, pulling the second page from the envelope. "For the past eighteen months, you and Vanessa have been skimming funds from the charity Evelyn founded—the very foundation that funds breast cancer research and treatment for women who can't afford it."

The gasps from the audience were deafening. Evelyn looked up at me, her eyes wide. She hadn't known. I had kept this from her because her doctors told me stress would severely hinder her chemotherapy progress. I had spent months working with a private investigator and the forensic auditors in secret, waiting for the right moment. I had planned to hand this to Caleb quietly after the honeymoon to save him the heartbreak.
But Vanessa had chosen cruelty. And I chose destruction.
