Chapter 8 - The Verdict of Truth

The jury deliberated for less than ninety minutes.

"On the count of grand larceny, we find the defendant, Vanessa Sterling, guilty." "On the count of corporate fraud and identity theft, we find the defendant, Vanessa Sterling, guilty." "On the count of misdemeanor assault and harassment, we find the defendant, Vanessa Sterling, guilty."

The judge, a stern woman with no tolerance for financial parasites, ordered Vanessa to stand for sentencing.

"Vanessa Sterling, your actions demonstrate a profound lack of empathy and a calculated level of cruelty that this court finds deeply disturbing," the judge stated, her voice cutting through the silent courtroom. "You did not just steal money; you stole hope from vulnerable women to fund a lifestyle of hollow vanity. I sentence you to eleven years in a maximum-security state facility, with no possibility of parole until you serve at least eight years."

Vanessa collapsed into her chair, wailing hysterically as the bailiffs stepped forward to lead her away. Linda, who was sitting in the holding area awaiting her own transfer, watched her daughter get dragged down the hallway in matching orange jumpsuits.

As we walked out of the courthouse, a swarm of reporters surrounded us. I held Evelyn’s hand tightly, while Caleb walked proudly on her other side.

"Mr. Vance! Do you have a statement for the press?" a reporter yelled, shoving a microphone into my face.

I stopped and looked into the camera lens. "Two months ago, someone at that wedding said that 'some people are too sensitive.' But the truth is, sensitivity is not weakness. Kindness is not a flaw. My wife fought cancer and won, and she fought the people who tried to destroy her legacy and won. The truth always comes to light. And to anyone out there fighting a battle—keep fighting. The monsters don't win."
