Chapter 2 - The Shell Game

"You're lying!" Vanessa screamed, her face contorting, the elegant bride persona completely dissolving. "Caleb, tell him he's crazy! Tell him to stop!"
Caleb looked at the documents in his hands, then at his wife. "Vanessa... the bank account numbers listed here. These are the ones you told me were for your business expansion. The ones you asked me to co-sign last month."
"Caleb, baby, no, listen to me—"
"Is it true?" Caleb’s voice shook. "Did you steal from my mother’s charity?"
"We didn't steal!" Linda countered sharply, stepping in front of her daughter. "It was a management fee! We provided consulting services for Evelyn's foundation! Evelyn is sick, her mind isn't what it used to be, she signed the authorization forms!"
"She signed them because she trusted her future daughter-in-law," I said, stepping forward, shielding Evelyn behind my bulk. "But she didn't sign the amendments that transferred forty percent of the charity’s donation pool into an offshore account registered under Linda's maiden name. That's grand larceny, Linda. Forgery. And corporate embezzlement."
Evelyn gripped my arm tightly. "Martin... the treatment fund... the patients..."
"I secured the remaining assets two weeks ago, Evie," I murmured to her gently. "The foundation is safe. But the money they took? That's what paid for this wedding. The champagne, the flowers, the dress Vanessa is wearing—it was all paid for with stolen money meant for women fighting for their lives."
The guests who had laughed just minutes before looked down at their glasses in deep shame. Vanessa’s friends—the ones who had cheered when she yanked Evelyn’s wig off—quietly began to slide away from the stage, trying to disappear into the shadows of the ballroom.

"This wedding is over," Caleb said suddenly. He looked down at the gold band on his finger, his expression a mixture of profound disgust and heartbreak. He pulled the ring off and dropped it into the glass of champagne on the table beside him.
"Caleb, no! You can't do this!" Vanessa cried, reaching for him, but he stepped back, leaving her standing alone beneath the white flowers.
