Chapter 6 - The Trapped Rats

With their business ruined and their social status obliterated, Vanessa and Linda grew desperate. Richard Sterling withdrew as their legal counsel forty-eight hours after the video went viral, stating publicly that his clients had misrepresented the facts of the case to him. Left with a public defender and mounting evidence, the two women did what cornered animals always do: they turned on each other.

Caleb received a frantic text from Vanessa in the middle of the night, begging him to meet her at a local diner. Against my initial advice, he went—but he wore a wire provided by the district attorney’s office.

I sat in an unmarked police van a block away from the diner, listening through headphones alongside Detective Marcus.

"Caleb, please," Vanessa sobbed through the static. "It wasn't my idea. The charity account... my mother forced me to do it. She told me Evelyn would never notice. She said it was our inheritance anyway because we were marrying into the family."

"You co-signed the documents, Vanessa," Caleb’s voice was remarkably steady, though I could hear the deep pain underneath. "You took the money. You bought a hundred-thousand-dollar sports car with funds meant for cancer patients."

"I can give it back! I'll testify against her!" Vanessa pleaded, her voice becoming frantic. "Just please, tell your father to stop the criminal prosecution. I love you, Caleb. We're married! We can start over!"

"We aren't married, Vanessa," Caleb said quietly. "The marriage license was never filed with the city hall. I checked on Monday morning. You forgot to submit the paperwork because you were too busy planning your grand reveal on stage. We were never legally husband and wife."

A sharp intake of breath echoed through the wire. Vanessa realized her final leverage was gone.

"You trapped me," she hissed, her voice suddenly dropping the sweet, victim act, revealing the icy malice beneath. "You and your pathetic, bald mother. You think you're better than us? Your mother is going to die anyway, why does she care about a stupid charity?"

In the van, Detective Marcus looked at me. "That's enough. Move in."

The police cars pulled up to the diner with their lights flashing. Within minutes, Vanessa was led out in handcuffs, screaming curses at Caleb, who stood by the diner entrance, watching her go without a single tear left in his eyes.
