Chapter 3 - The Senator's Shield

By 8:00 AM the following morning, the front gates of the Whitaker estate were once again swarming with news crews.
On every cable news channel, live footage broadcast from the steps of the downtown federal courthouse showed Senator Thomas Vale—a powerful, white-haired politician with decades of political influence—standing beside a tearful, pale Vanessa Vale.
"My daughter," Senator Vale declared into a cluster of news microphones, his voice booming with practiced political indignation, "is the victim of a calculated, high-tech character assassination! Evan Whitaker, a billionaire suffering from unhinged paranoia and grief-induced psychosis, staged an elaborate, illegal surveillance operation in his own home. He used manipulated audio, coerced low-wage staff, and staged events to frame my daughter!"
Vanessa dabbed her eyes with a silk handkerchief, looking fragile and heartbroken for the cameras.
"I loved those children like my own," Vanessa sobbed into the microphones. "Evan has been unravelling for months. He dressed as a servant to stalk me! He needs psychiatric help, and I am petitioning the court for immediate protective custody of Sophie and Caleb to ensure their safety!"
Inside the mansion’s breakfast room, Evan watched the broadcast on a muted television. Sophie sat beside him, quietly eating a bowl of oatmeal, while Caleb colored a picture of a blue truck.
"Daddy?" Sophie whispered, looking up at him with wide, anxious eyes. "Is the bad lady coming back?"
Evan picked up a napkin, gently wiping a smudge of strawberry jam from Caleb's chin, then smiled warmly at his daughter. He took Sophie’s small hand in his.
"No, sweetheart," Evan said, his voice absolute and calm. "She is never coming back into this house. Ever."
"The television said she wants to take us," Sophie murmured, her bottom lip trembling.
"The television doesn't know who your daddy is," Evan said softly, kissing the back of her hand. "Nobody takes my children. Not a senator, not a judge, not anyone in the world."
After finishing breakfast, Evan handed the kids over to Grace, who took them to the indoor playroom to build a blanket fort. Evan then walked into the study, where Victoria Vance was already on a conference call with three of the top legal minds in the country.
"Senator Vale is playing a dangerous game, Evan," Victoria said as she ended the call. "He’s trying to shift public opinion to pressure the family court judge into granting temporary custody to Vanessa while the criminal charges are litigated. If a judge buys into the 'paranoid billionaire' narrative, they could order a social worker evaluation of the home."
"Let them send a social worker," Evan said coldly, leaning over the desk. "Let them examine every inch of this house, every security log, every medical record from Dr. Harrison, and every deleted file Grace recovered."
"It’s not that simple," Victoria warned. "Senator Vale appointed Judge Montgomery to the appellate bench eight years ago. Montgomery is presiding over the emergency custody hearing at 2:00 PM today."
"So the deck is stacked," Evan stated flatly.
"Completely," Victoria agreed. "If we walk into that courtroom with just the video tapes, Vale’s lawyers will claim they were illegally obtained under state wiretapping laws and move to have them suppressed."
Evan stood up, walking over to his private wall safe. He tapped in a seven-digit code and pulled out a small, thick black leather book—a journal that had belonged to his late wife, Clara.
He set the book on the desk in front of Victoria.
"Clara didn't die of a sudden heart condition three years ago, Victoria," Evan said, his voice dropping into a whisper thick with raw, buried grief. "She was sick for six months. And three weeks before she passed, she wrote down a warning in this diary."
Victoria opened the journal, reading the handwritten entry on the bookmarked page. Her eyes widened in utter shock.
'Thomas Vale came to the house today while Evan was in Asia. He demanded that we merge Whitaker Enterprises with Vale Logistics. When I refused, he told me that if anything ever happened to me, his daughter Vanessa would make sure my children were raised 'properly' under his family's control. I am scared, Evan. If I die... check my medical records at St. Jude's.'
Victoria looked up at Evan, her breath hitching in her throat. "Evan... are you saying...?"
"I had Clara's body exhumed quietly two years ago for private toxicological testing," Evan revealed, his eyes turning to burning ice. "I kept the results hidden because the lab said the compound was untraceable by standard coroners. But now... now I have the digital paper trail connecting Julian Sterling to the lab that manufactured that exact compound."

Victoria gasped. "It wasn't just a custody plot. It was a multi-year assassination plan."
Evan picked up his car keys. "Call the District Attorney, Victoria. Tell him we're not just going to a custody hearing today. We're attending a murder indictment."
