Chapter 4 - The Courtroom Trap

The county courthouse at 2:00 PM was a circus.

Dozens of reporters, security personnel, and curious onlookers packed the marble hallways. Senator Thomas Vale stood outside Courtroom 302, flanked by six attorneys in dark bespoke suits. Vanessa sat on a bench beside him, wearing a modest pastel-blue dress, holding a rosary, and playing the role of a persecuted, saintly stepmother to perfection.

When Evan walked down the corridor, dressed in an immaculate charcoal suit, flanked by Victoria Vance and Marcus, the crowd fell silent.

Senator Vale stepped forward, blocking the courtroom entrance with an arrogant, condescending smirk.

"Evan," Vale said, his voice loud enough for the reporters to hear. "It’s a tragedy what grief has done to your mind. If you sign over temporary guardianship to Vanessa today, I will personally see to it that you get the best psychiatric care in the country. Don't make this ugly for the children."

Evan stopped three inches from the Senator's face. His towering presence made the older politician instinctively step back.

"Keep speaking, Thomas," Evan whispered, so low only Vale could hear. "Every word you say in front of these cameras is going to add five years to your federal sentence."

"You're bluffing, Whitaker," Vale hissed back, his eyes narrowing. "Judge Montgomery is my man. You have no legal standing."

"We'll see," Evan replied calmly, stepping past him into the courtroom.

The double doors swung shut, locking out the press. Judge Montgomery, a stern, grey-haired man with heavy jowls, sat atop the bench, frowning down at the parties as they took their seats at the counselor tables.

"We are here in the matter of Vale v. Whitaker, regarding emergency temporary protective custody of the minor children, Sophie and Caleb Whitaker," Judge Montgomery announced, rapping his gavel once. "Mr. Vale's counsel, you may present your petition."

Vanessa’s lead attorney stood up smoothly. "Your Honor, as outlined in our emergency filing, Mr. Evan Whitaker has exhibited severe psychological instability, including dressing as a domestic servant to conduct illegal surveillance on his own fiancée, fabricating deepfake audio recordings, and isolating the children from their primary caregiver, Miss Vanessa Vale. We request immediate temporary custody and an emergency psychiatric hold for Mr. Whitaker."

Judge Montgomery nodded approvingly. "The court takes these allegations very seriously. Mrs. Vance, how does the defense respond?"

Victoria Vance stood up, her posture regal, unbothered, and completely in control.

"Your Honor," Victoria began, "before we address the custody petition, we have a threshold motion regarding the qualification of this court to hear this matter."

Judge Montgomery frowned, leaning forward over his bench. "Mrs. Vance, this is a family court proceeding. I am the presiding judge."

"Not anymore, Your Honor," Victoria said smoothly.

She held up a white sealed document. "Ten minutes ago, the Chief Judge of the Federal Circuit Court issued a federal jurisdictional override. This court's proceedings are officially stayed under Federal Order 88-B."

Senator Vale slammed his hand down on the plaintiff's table. "This is outrageous! On what grounds?!"

The heavy doors at the back of the courtroom burst open with a loud THUD.

A dozen heavily armed FBI agents, accompanied by the State Attorney General and the District Attorney personally, marched down the center aisle of the courtroom.

The District Attorney stepped forward, presenting a thick, red-stamped federal indictment directly to Judge Montgomery.

"Judge Montgomery," the District Attorney announced loudly, his voice echoing in the grand courtroom, "you are ordered to step down from the bench immediately. Federal agents hold an arrest warrant for you regarding judicial bribery and obstruction of justice in connection with Senator Thomas Vale and Sterling Capital."

Judge Montgomery’s face turned gray. His gavel slipped from his hand, clattering uselessly onto the wooden bench. Two federal agents stepped up onto the dais, placing the judge in handcuffs and leading him away through a side door.

Vanessa let out a choked scream, falling back into her chair.

Senator Vale stood frozen, his eyes wide with utter disbelief as the Lead FBI Agent walked directly up to him.

"Thomas Vale," the agent declared, pulling out a set of steel handcuffs, "you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit capital murder, federal wire fraud, bribery of a public official, and treasonous money laundering."

"You can't arrest me!" Vale shouted, his voice cracking with panicked desperation as his hands were forced behind his back. "I am a United States Senator!"

"Not anymore, Thomas," Evan said, standing up at the defense table, looking down at the ruined politician with absolute, uncompromising coldness. "The Senate Ethics Committee stripped your immunity one hour ago based on the documents recovered from your daughter's safe."

Vanessa scrambled across the floor on her knees, reaching toward Evan’s polished leather shoes, crying hysterically. "Evan! Evan, please! It was my father! He forced me to do it! He threatened me! I love you, Evan! Please save me!"

Evan looked down at the woman who had struck his children, threatened their lives, and tried to destroy his family from the inside out.

"Take her away," Evan commanded softly.

The agents dragged Vanessa and her father out of the courtroom in chains, their cries echoing down the marble hallway until the heavy doors swung shut, leaving behind a silence so total it felt like a sacred blessing.
