Chapter 6 - Shadows from the Past

Although Vanessa and her father were behind bars, the trial preparation required Evan to confront the deepest, darkest secrets of his late wife’s passing.
One rainy Tuesday morning, Evan sat in Victoria Vance’s downtown office. On the table between them sat the final forensic report issued by the Chief Medical Examiner of the state, along with a thick black binder of financial transfers.
"Evan," Victoria said gently, pushing the report toward him. "The lab results are conclusive. The compound found in Clara’s tissue samples was a synthetic toxin developed by a private pharmaceutical firm in Switzerland owned entirely by Julian Sterling."
Evan closed his eyes, taking a long, shuddering breath. For three years, he had lived with the crushing, unbearable guilt that he hadn't been there when Clara died—that her heart had simply given out while he was away on business.
"It wasn't a natural illness," Evan whispered, his voice thick with raw, buried grief. "She was being poisoned over six months..."
"Vanessa was her private nurse during those final months, Evan," Victoria revealed softly, her voice filled with deep compassion. "That was how she infiltrated your life. She poisoned Clara slowly, comforted you during your grief, and then stepped into Clara’s shoes to take over the estate and the children."
Evan’s hands squeezed into white-knuckled fists on his knees. The sheer, monstrous villainy of the woman he had almost married was almost too vast to comprehend. She hadn't just tried to abuse his children; she had stolen their mother from them.
"Does the prosecutor have enough for capital murder?" Evan asked, his voice chillingly calm.
"More than enough," Victoria affirmed. "Vanessa’s former assistant, who was fired three months ago after refusing to sign a false non-disclosure agreement, just came forward. She preserved text messages between Vanessa and Julian Sterling detailing the exact dates and dosages given to Clara."
Victoria laid a second document on the desk. "The District Attorney is offering a plea bargain to Julian Sterling: life without parole in exchange for full testimony against Vanessa and Thomas Vale. Sterling accepted thirty minutes ago."
Evan stood up, walking over to the floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the rainy city skyline.

"No plea bargains for Vanessa," Evan declared coldly, his reflection in the glass dark and unshakeable. "She goes to trial. The world needs to see every single piece of evidence. Every video, every audio file, every medical report. I want her name erased from polite society forever."
"She won't see the light of day again, Evan," Victoria promised firmly. "I give you my solemn word as an officer of the court."
