Chapter 5 - The Healing Garden

Two weeks later.

The dark clouds that had hung over the Whitaker estate for six long, agonizing months had finally dissolved into clear, golden sunshine.

The news of the fall of Senator Thomas Vale, Vanessa Vale, Julian Sterling, and their corrupt judicial network dominated global headlines. The federal government seized all assets associated with Sterling Capital, and every single cent stolen from the Whitaker Children's Educational Trust was recovered and returned with interest.

At the estate, the heavy security guards were replaced by polite, vetted personnel. The cold, sterile rules Vanessa had imposed were completely erased.

On a warm Saturday afternoon, the sun glistened off the freshly pruned hydrangea bushes in the estate's rear garden.

Evan sat on a wooden bench near the lawn, wearing a comfortable linen shirt and jeans. He watched as Sophie and Caleb ran through the grass, chasing a golden retriever puppy Evan had adopted for them earlier that week.

"Look, Daddy!" Sophie giggled, her bright yellow dress fluttering as she held up a bouquet of freshly picked purple wildflowers. "Barnaby likes the flowers!"

Caleb tumbled into the soft grass beside the puppy, holding his battered brown rabbit in one hand and hugging the puppy’s neck with the other, letting out deep, belly-shaking giggles as the puppy licked his face.

Grace Miller walked out onto the patio, carrying a tray with three glasses of fresh strawberry lemonade and a plate of warm chocolate chip cookies. She wore casual, comfortable clothes—having officially resigned her position as housekeeper to accept Evan’s offer to become the estate’s Director of Household Operations and primary manager of the new Clara Whitaker Children’s Protection Foundation.

"Lemonade break, kiddos!" Grace called out with a warm, radiant smile.

"YAY! COOKIES!" Caleb squealed, scrambling up from the grass and sprinting toward the patio with the puppy trotting behind him.

Sophie ran over, taking a glass of lemonade and handing her bouquet of wildflowers to Grace. "These are for you, Grace! Because you're our hero!"

Grace’s eyes welled with sweet, emotional tears as she accepted the flowers, kneeling down to hug Sophie tightly. "Thank you, sweetheart. You're my hero, too."

Evan stood up, walking over to the patio table. He picked up a glass of lemonade, looking at Grace with an expression of quiet, profound peace.

"The foundation paperwork was finalized this morning, Grace," Evan told her softly. "We've already funded the first five crisis shelters for domestic staff and children in Texas. Your story... your courage... it's going to save thousands of lives."

Grace looked out over the blooming gardens, watching the children play without fear, without sadness, and without the shadow of cruelty over their shoulders.

"We did it, Mr. Whitaker," Grace whispered softly.

"Call me Evan, Grace," he smiled warmly, clinking his glass against hers. "We're a team now."
