Chapter 8 - The Return of Sunshine

Spring arrived at the Whitaker estate with unprecedented beauty.
The grand mansion, once cold and filled with fearful silence, was now filled with music, laughter, and light.
The dark memories were systematically replaced. The nursery was completely remodeled into a bright, airy art studio for Sophie, filled with canvases, paints, and large windows that let in the warm afternoon sun.
Caleb’s room was transformed into an adventure-themed playroom with a indoor wooden climbing fort, soft mats, and shelves overflowing with books and toys.
One Saturday afternoon, Evan hosted a massive garden party on the very terrace where Vanessa had raised her hand months earlier.
Over two hundred guests attended—not shallow socialites or political schemers, but true friends, local teachers, staff members and their families, and children from the local community shelters funded by the Clara Whitaker Foundation.
Long wooden tables were covered with colorful tablecloths, fresh fruit, lemonade, and handmade treats. Children ran freely across the sprawling green lawns, playing tag, jumping in bouncy castles, and petting farm animals brought in for a pop-up petting zoo.
Sophie stood at an easel near the hydrangea bushes, painting a vibrant picture of a sunny garden with a big red house and four figures holding hands.
Evan walked over, holding a glass of iced tea, leaning down to look at her painting.
"That's beautiful, sweetie," Evan smiled, kissing the top of her head. "Who are the four people in the picture?"
Sophie pointed her paintbrush at the canvas with a bright, radiant smile. "That's me, that's Caleb, that's you... and that's Grace."
Evan looked over toward the patio, where Grace was laughing with two of the foundation's social workers while helping Caleb adjust his paper party hat.
A soft, warm feeling bloomed in Evan’s chest—a feeling he hadn't experienced since Clara’s passing. It wasn't just relief; it was the quiet, steady return of hope.
"Do you like having Grace here, Sophie?" Evan asked gently.
May you like
Sophie looked up at her father, her big brown eyes shining with absolute clarity and warmth. "Grace makes our house feel like a home again, Daddy. She makes us feel safe."
Evan nodded softly, looking back at Grace. "She does, sweetie. She really does."
