Chapter 3 - The Guardian’s Oath

By midnight, the small suburban street was completely silent, but inside Clara’s living room, a war council was taking place.

Marcus stood by the window, his earpiece glowing faint blue, coordinating with Blackwood Security assets across the city. On the coffee table lay three encrypted laptops, streaming live financial feeds, corporate registries, and legal dossiers.

Clara sat on the sofa, wrapped in a fleece blanket, watching Thomas. The man who had been her gentle lover six years ago had fully morphed into the legendary corporate predator the world knew as Thomas Blackwood. He paced the room, delivering low, razor-sharp commands into his phone.

"I want every shell company linked to Arthur Blackwood audited by sunrise," Thomas commanded his head of forensic accounting over an encrypted line. "Every offshore account in the Caymans, every real estate trust in Jersey, every political donation made over the last decade. I don't care if it costs fifty million dollars tonight. Find the crack in his wall."

He ended the call and turned to Marcus. "Is the house secure?"

"Full perimeter coverage, sir," Marcus reported smoothly. "Six plainclothes officers on the street, thermal sensors around the yard, and armored transports on standby. No one approaches this property without my personal clearance."

Thomas nodded, then walked over to the sofa and sat beside Clara. The terrifying aura of authority vanished instantly, replaced by a deep, aching tenderness as he looked at her exhausted face.

"You should sleep," he said gently, brushing a dark lock of hair away from her eye. "You've been carrying the weight of the world for six years, Clara. Let me carry it now."

"Thomas," Clara murmured, searching his dark eyes. "What are you going to do? Arthur controls thirty-five percent of the board shares. If you launch a direct attack on him, the market will panic. Blackwood Holdings could lose billions in market cap overnight."

"Let it burn," Thomas said without a second's hesitation. "I built Blackwood Holdings to honor my father's memory. But Arthur turned it into a weapon to destroy my family. I would reduce that entire sixty-story glass tower to ash before I let him threaten you or Sophie ever again."

Clara looked at him, tears welling up once more. In his eyes, she saw no hesitation, no corporate calculation—only the fierce, protective devotion of the man she had never stopped loving.

Suddenly, a small figure appeared in the hallway doorway. Sophie, wearing pink rabbit pajamas, rubbed her eyes with her tiny fists, her stuffed bear dangling from her hand.

"Mommy?" Sophie whimpered softly. "I had a bad dream about the dog across the street."

Thomas immediately stood up. He walked over to his daughter, kneeling down to her eye level. "Hey there, little bird. It was just a bad dream."

Sophie looked at him, her huge blue eyes blinking in the dim light of the living room. "Are you still here, green-car mister?"

May you like

Thomas offered her a soft, genuine smile—a smile he hadn't used in six long years. "I'm still here, Sophie. And if it's okay with your mommy... I'm never leaving again."

Sophie looked at Clara, who gave her a nod through her tears. The little girl stepped forward, wrapping her tiny arms around Thomas's neck. Thomas pulled his daughter against his chest, burying his face in her soft hair, feeling her small heart beating steadily against his own.
