Chapter 8 - The Reconstruction of Trust

Rebuilding a life after six years of forced separation required more than wealth and safety; it required time, patience, and the gentle mending of quiet wounds.

In the evenings, after Sophie was tucked safely into her canopy bed with Mrs. Reynolds reading her bedtime stories, Thomas and Clara would sit together by the fireplace in the master suite.

Clara sat between Thomas's knees on the soft rug, her head resting back against his chest while his long fingers gently stroked her hair.

"I used to watch the news in that small house," Clara confessed quietly, staring into the flickering embers of the fire. "Every time Blackwood Holdings announced a new acquisition or every time your face appeared on a business magazine, I would hold the page and cry. I felt so guilty, Thomas. I thought I had ruined your chance at having a normal family."

Thomas wrapped his arms tightly around her waist, burying his face in the crook of her neck. "You saved your father, Clara. You protected our daughter. You showed more courage in those six years than I ever showed in a boardroom. If anyone should feel guilty, it's me—for not looking deeper, for letting my pride believe you had just walked away."

"We were both victims of a cruel man's greed," Clara said, turning around in his arms to look into his eyes. "But we survived it, Thomas. Look at us. We survived."

Thomas reached into his pocket and pulled out the small velvet box once more. He didn't say a word. He simply opened it, taking out the sparkling diamond ring that had waited six long years for its rightful owner.

He slipped it gently onto the ring finger of her left hand. It fit perfectly.

Clara looked at the sparkling stone, tears of pure joy glistening in her eyes. She reached up, framing Thomas's handsome face with her hands, and pulled him down into a passionate, breathtaking kiss—a kiss that erased six years of cold nights, sealing their eternal promise to one another.
