Chapter 6 - THE SILENT INTRUDER

Three days later, a heavy autumn mist rolled in off the bay, cloaking the sprawling gardens of Aldgate Manor in a thick blanket of grey.

At 10:00 AM, a large commercial telecommunications van pulled up to the security gates at the front of the estate. The driver presented official work orders from the local utility company, requesting emergency access to repair a main fiber-optic junction box located in the basement service corridor of the west wing.

Leo, the security chief, conducted a thorough inspection. The technician was an older man with grey hair, wearing a high-visibility vest, carrying standard diagnostic equipment. His ID matched the utility company database, and his tools cleared the electronic scanner.

"Access granted," Leo radioed to the main security office. "Escort technician to the west wing service corridor."

Inside the main house, Nadia was standing near the grand staircase, checking the morning cleaning roster with Elspeth. Through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the foyer, she saw the utility technician walking down the hallway, escorted by a junior security guard named Thomas.

The technician moved with a slight limp, his head bowed, carrying a heavy tool canvas bag.

At that exact moment, the door to the waiting room creaked open.

Petra stepped out into the foyer. She was holding her small green wooden chair in both hands.

Nadia’s heart stopped.

Petra walked slowly across the polished marble floor. She didn't look at Nadia, nor did she look at the security guard. Her hazel eyes were locked entirely on the utility technician walking twenty feet away.

She set the green chair down in the exact middle of the grand foyer.

Then, she slowly turned the chair so its back was facing the front entrance—and its seat was facing the wall.

The chair was facing the wall.

Elspeth’s warning from Nadia’s first day echoed in her mind with terrifying clarity: “If it moves—if you arrive and it's facing the wall... that's information. That it's going to be a hard day.”

Petra pointed her small, pale finger at the utility technician.

"Blue butterfly," Petra whispered. Her voice was quiet, but in the echoing silence of the marble foyer, it sounded like a thunderclap.

The utility technician froze in his tracks.

In that microscopic fraction of a second, the older, limping technician’s posture instantly transformed. The stoop vanished, replaced by the lethal, coiled tension of an elite assassin.

Before the junior security guard could even reach for his sidearm, Levchenko—disguised as the technician—spun around with terrifying speed, drawing a suppressed weapon from his heavy canvas tool bag and striking Thomas across the temple with the heavy steel barrel, dropping the guard instantly to the floor.

"Lockdown! Code Red!" Nadia screamed at the top of her lungs, grabbing Petra around the waist, lifting her off her feet, and diving behind the massive stone pillar supporting the central staircase!

Pfft! Pfft!

Two suppressed rounds slammed into the marble floor where Nadia and Petra had been standing half a second earlier, sending sharp stone splinters flying into the air!

Levchenko did not pursue them; he knew his window of surprise was closing instantly. He sprinted with terrifying speed down the central corridor toward Callum’s private study!

"Callum!" Nadia roared into her radio headset, keeping her body draped protectively over Petra behind the stone pillar. "West corridor! Levchenko is inside! He's armed!"

Inside his study, Callum heard Nadia’s shout over the intercom system at the exact same moment the heavy wooden doors of his office were violently kicked off their hinges!

Levchenko burst into the room, his suppressed weapon raised, aiming straight for Callum’s chest!

But Callum was not sitting behind his desk.

Callum was standing behind the door, wielding a heavy iron fireplace poker! He swung the iron bar with brutal, desperate force, striking Levchenko’s weapon arm with a sickening CRACK!

The suppressed pistol flew across the room, bouncing off the rug.

Levchenko let out a guttural roar of pain, but his assassin training took over instantly. He lunged at Callum with his left fist, striking Callum across the jaw and sending him crashing over his mahogany desk, scattering papers and crystal lamps across the floor!

Levchenko pulled a combat blade from his boot, raising it high, intent on driving the steel into Callum’s chest!

Suddenly, a heavy bronze statue of a shipping vessel slammed into the back of Levchenko’s head with deafening force!

Levchenko stumbled forward, dazed, blood pouring from a gash on his scalp. He turned around, his eyes wild with fury.

Nadia stood in the doorway, holding the heavy bronze pedestal, her face pale, her eyes burning with fierce, unstoppable rage.

"Get away from him!" Nadia snarled.

Levchenko growled, turning his combat knife toward Nadia. He took one step forward—

BANG! BANG!

Two deafening gunshots echoed through the study.

Levchenko’s eyes went wide with shock. He looked down at his chest, where two neat holes had opened up in his tactical vest. He collapsed to his knees, dropping the combat blade, before crashing face-down onto the Persian rug, motionless.

Behind him stood Leo, holding his smoking service weapon, flanked by three heavy security guards with automatic rifles.

"Room clear!" Leo yelled, rushing forward to check Levchenko's pulse. "Target down!"

Callum pulled himself up from the ruined desk, wiping blood from his lip. He looked past Leo, past the fallen assassin, straight at Nadia, who was still holding the heavy bronze statue, her chest heaving as adrenaline surged through her veins.

"Nadia..." Callum panted, rushing over to her and taking the heavy pedestal from her trembling hands. "Are you hurt? Where is Petra?"

"I'm fine," Nadia breathed, leaning against his chest for a single, brief second to steady herself. "Petra is behind the foyer pillar. I told her to stay down."

Callum didn't hesitate. He ran out of the study and sprinted down the hallway to the grand foyer.

Behind the massive stone pillar, Petra was sitting quietly on the marble floor. She was holding her small green wooden chair in her lap, her eyes wide, but her body completely calm.

Callum dropped to his knees, pulling his daughter into a fierce, desperate embrace, tears brimming in his dark eyes.

"I've got you, baby," Callum sobbed, kissing her hair over and over again. "I've got you. You're safe."

Petra did not pull away. Slowly, carefully, she raised her small arm and placed her hand against her father's back.

"The bad man stopped moving," Petra said softly.

"Yes, sweetheart," Callum whispered, looking up as Nadia walked over to join them, her hand resting gently on Callum’s shoulder. "He stopped moving. And he's never coming back."
