Chapter 7 - THE FALL OF VIKTOR VANE

The aftermath of the attempted assassination shook the international underworld to its very core.

With Levchenko deceased and Julian locked in an offshore holding facility, Viktor Vane’s syndicate was exposed. Using the decrypted intelligence pulled from Julian’s wiretap relay, combined with operational evidence gathered by Marcus Vance and federal law enforcement, Callum launched a ruthless, multi-front economic counter-offensive.

Within seventy-two hours, international maritime law enforcement agencies raided Vane’s primary shipping terminals in Rotterdam, Riga, and Marseille. Over eight hundred million dollars in illegal contraband was seized, and Vane’s top financial proxies were indicted under international racketeering laws.

A week after the incident at Aldgate Manor, Viktor Vane himself was arrested at his high-security compound in Switzerland, hauled away in handcuffs before global news cameras.

The shadow that had hung over the Aldgate family for years was finally, permanently lifted.

Back at the manor, the atmosphere had undergone a profound transformation. The dark, pressurized secrecy was gone. Sunlight flooded the long marble corridors through wide-open curtains, and the crisp autumn air washed away the lingerings of tension.

In the sunroom, Callum sat across from Nadia, reviewing the final security sweep reports.

"Federal authorities have confirmed the complete seizure of Vane's European holdings," Callum said, setting the papers down. "Our shipping licenses have been fully cleared, and the federal task force has officially closed their file on Aldgate Commercial."

"That is exceptional news, Mr. Aldgate," Nadia said with a quiet smile.

Callum leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, his dark eyes fixed on her with an intensity that made her heart skip a beat.

"Nadia," Callum said, his voice dropping into a deep, warm register. "When I hired you three weeks ago, I was looking for a household manager who could maintain order and keep my daughter comfortable."

"I remember," Nadia said gently.

"You did far more than manage a household," Callum said softly. "You saved my life. You saved my daughter’s life. And you brought light back into a house that had been dark for a very long time."

He reached out, placing his hand over hers on the table. His palm was warm, solid, and steady.

"I don't want you to be just my household manager anymore, Nadia," Callum said directly. "I want you here. Permanently. As part of this family. If you will have us."

Nadia looked at his hand resting over hers, feeling a wave of deep, genuine warmth wash over her heart. For six years since her husband's death, she had built walls around herself, focusing entirely on her work and supporting her son Marcos. She had never expected to find a place where she felt so deeply valued, so profoundly understood.

"Callum," Nadia whispered, a soft smile touching her lips. "I would like nothing more."

At that moment, the door to the sunroom clicked open.

Petra stepped inside. She was carrying her green wooden chair in both hands.

She walked across the room, set the chair down directly between Callum and Nadia, and sat down on it.

She looked at her father's hand resting over Nadia's. Then she reached into her tunic pocket and pulled out two polished river stones—one deep grey, one warm amber.

She placed the grey stone in Callum’s palm, and the amber stone in Nadia’s palm.

"They have the same weight," Petra stated clearly, looking from her father to Nadia. "Fourteen grams each."

Callum laughed—a rich, happy sound—and wrapped his arm around his daughter's shoulders. "Fourteen grams. A perfect match."

May you like

Nadia looked at the warm amber stone in her hand, her eyes glistening with happy tears. She looked at Petra, who was giving her a tiny, microscopic nod of total approval.

"A perfect match," Nadia agreed softly.
