Chapter 8 - LIGHT IN THE SHADOWS

Six months later. Spring in Boston.
The gardens of Aldgate Manor were in full, glorious bloom. Cherry blossoms showered pink petals across the manicured green lawns, and the clear blue ocean sparkled under a warm spring sun.
The estate was hosting a quiet, intimate gathering. There were no armed guards in black suits standing at every corner, no tension in the air, no whispered secrets behind closed doors.
Near the stone terrace, Marcos—Nadia’s nineteen-year-old son—was sitting at a chess table, playing a match with Marcus Vance. Marcos was smiling, moving his bishop with quiet confidence, completely at ease in the peaceful surroundings.
Nadia stood on the terrace wearing an elegant rose-colored dress, watching her son. Her heart swelled with pride. Marcos had settled into his independent supported housing fantastically, and his visits to Aldgate Manor had become a cherished weekend routine.
Callum walked up behind her, wrapping his arms gently around her waist and resting his chin on her shoulder.
"He's going to beat Marcus in five moves," Callum whispered into her ear.
Nadia giggled, leaning back against his chest. "Marcos doesn't show mercy on the chessboard. You should know that by now."
"I learned the hard way last Sunday," Callum agreed warmly, kissing her cheek.
Down in the garden, Petra was walking along the stone path, accompanied by Elspeth. She was holding a small wooden magnifying glass, examining the emerging spring flowers.
Suddenly, Petra stopped.
Hovering over a bush of blue hydrangeas was a small, vibrant creature, its delicate wings fluttering in the warm sunlight.
A real, living blue butterfly.
Petra watched it with quiet, mesmerizing focus. She didn't reach out to touch it; she simply observed its light, erratic movements as it danced from petal to petal.
She looked up toward the terrace, catching Nadia’s eye.
Petra pointed her small finger toward the hydrangea bush, then gave Nadia a warm, clear smile—a smile devoid of fear, devoid of suspicion, full of pure, innocent wonder.
Nadia waved back at her, her heart overflowing with contentment.
"She found a real one," Callum murmured, watching his daughter.
"Yes," Nadia whispered, holding Callum’s hands tightly against her waist. "The real ones are beautiful."
Callum turned Nadia around in his arms, looking into her eyes with deep, unshakeable devotion.
"You brought us back to life, Nadia," Callum said softly. "You gave Petra her childhood back. And you gave me a reason to look forward to every single morning."
"We gave each other a home, Callum," Nadia replied, reaching up to touch his face gently. "A place built on truth."

They kissed under the warm spring sun, surrounded by the sweet scent of blooming flowers and the peaceful sounds of laughter echoing across the garden.
The shadows of the past had finally burned away, leaving behind a family forged in courage, bound by love, and anchored in the enduring strength of the truth.
