One year later, the crisp autumn wind swept across the deck of a stunning cliffside villa overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
Brynn stood on the terrace, holding a warm cup of coffee, watching the sun paint the sky in brilliant shades of amber and violet. The past felt like a lifetime ago—a nightmare dreamt by a different person in a different world.
The forensic accounting firm, Hart & Sutherland, was now one of the most respected independent auditing firms in the country, specializing in protecting vulnerable partners and exposing corporate corruption. Brynn had even established a non-profit legal fund dedicated to helping victims of financial abuse and domestic coercion escape their abusers, using a portion of the recovered Sutherland assets to fund it.
Footsteps echoed softly behind her, followed by the familiar clink of ceramic mugs.
“Thinking about expanding the Seattle branch?” Lena asked, stepping out onto the terrace and handing Brynn a fresh pastry.
Brynn smiled, taking a bite and leaning against the railing. “Maybe. But right now, I’m just thinking about how quiet the kitchen is.”
Lena laughed, raising her mug in a silent toast. “The best kind of quiet.”
