Chapter 8 - An Unexpected Encounter

A month later, Brynn found herself walking through the high-end organic supermarket downtown—a place she used to shop at only to buy the luxury ingredients Marguerite demanded for her endless dinner parties, always paying with her own secret savings because Weston refused to give her grocery money.

Now, she bought whatever she liked, tossing gourmet cheeses and fresh flowers into her cart without a second thought.

“Brynn?”

The voice was thin, rasped, and unmistakably broken.

Brynn stopped pushing her cart and turned. Standing near the aisle of imported olive oils was Marguerite Sutherland. She wore a faded, off-brand coat that looked two sizes too big, and her hair was graying at the roots, completely unstyled. She looked like a ghost of the tyrant she used to be.

“Marguerite,” Brynn said calmly, her voice devoid of fear or mockery. Just absolute indifference.

Marguerite took a hesitant step forward, her hands trembling as she clutched a cheap plastic basket containing a single carton of milk and a loaf of day-old bread.

“Please,” Marguerite whispered, her eyes welling with sudden, desperate tears. “Please, Brynn. You have everything now. You have the house, the money, the firm... Weston is rotting in a cell. Have mercy. Drop the additional charges. Speak to the District Attorney. Save my son.”

Brynn looked down at the woman who had once forced her to scrub floors on her hands and knees while screaming insults about her worthlessness.

“When Weston dragged me across our kitchen floor by my hair,” Brynn said, her tone level and chillingly clear, “did he have mercy?”

Marguerite choked back a sob, unable to speak.

“When you stood over me, complaining that my bruised body was ruining your fifty-fifth birthday, did you have mercy?” Brynn continued, stepping closer so Marguerite could see the absolute strength in her eyes. “You taught me that survival means showing no weakness, Marguerite. You built a kingdom on cruelty and exploitation. Don’t beg me to save you from the foundation you laid yourself.”

With that, Brynn turned her back, wheeled her cart away, and left Marguerite standing alone in the aisle, weeping silently among the empty shelves.
