Chapter 3 - The Shadow Campaign

Madeline checked into a luxury suite at the Ritz-Carlton, taking Liam with her. The first night was a blur of trauma. Liam wouldn't speak; he curled into a ball on the bed, staring at the walls. Madeline spent the night bathing him, gently scrubbing away two years of neglect, and feeding him small bits of nutritious food until he finally fell into a fitful sleep.

While he slept, Madeline went to work. She was an expansion strategist; she knew how to tear down a system, bit by bit.

She hired the best private investigator in the state, a man known for digging up secrets that were supposed to stay buried in the dirt. Then, she reached out to an old colleague from London, a high-powered divorce attorney named Sarah Vance, who dealt exclusively with "predatory assets."

“He’s been moving money, Maddy,” Sarah said over the video call, her face illuminated by the blue light of her screen. “Ever since you left for London. He’s been shifting capital into a holding company under Cynthia’s name. He thinks he’s been clever, but he’s left a trail of breadcrumbs so wide it’s an indictment.”

Madeline looked at the documents on her screen. “Can we prove he spent the money on their lavish lifestyle while Liam was starving?”

“We can prove it, we can freeze it, and we can make sure he never touches a penny of it again,” Sarah promised.

Madeline also replayed the audio file she had recorded in the living room. It was 12 minutes long. It captured Noelle calling Liam a "burden," Cynthia mocking his hunger, and Jeffrey admitting he knew the child was failing and chose not to seek medical attention.

It was enough to lose custody. It was enough to lose everything.

But Madeline wanted more than just a victory in court. She wanted Jeffrey to feel the exact weight of the world she had felt when she walked through that front door. She began reaching out to Jeffrey’s business partners, carefully leaking hints about the "instability" within the CEO's office. The stocks began to fluctuate. Jeffrey’s world—the world he thought he had secured by replacing her—started to show its first hairline fractures.
