Chapter 5 - The Reckoning at Buckhead

With Jeffrey ousted and the assets frozen, the mansion in Buckhead became a tomb. Noelle and Cynthia were in a panic. The utilities were about to be cut off, the staff had left, and the credit cards were declined.
Madeline arrived on a rainy Tuesday morning, this time with a team of professional movers and her attorney.
Noelle stood in the foyer, her face twisted in rage. “You think you can just barge in here? This is my son’s home!”
“Your son doesn't have a home anymore, Noelle,” Madeline said, stepping inside. “And this house was purchased under my investment LLC. You have until noon to remove your personal belongings. Anything left will be donated to the city charity.”
Cynthia walked down the stairs, trying to maintain her composure, but her eyes were red-rimmed. “You’re a monster, Madeline. You’re destroying a family!”
Madeline laughed, a hollow, bitter sound. “You call this a family? You starved a toddler. You mocked his suffering. You deserve every ounce of the ruin that’s coming your way.”
As the movers began to clear the furniture—the very furniture Cynthia had bragged about choosing—Madeline walked into the room where Liam had been forced to play. She took a marker and wrote a large ‘X’ on the floor where he had been found.

“You’ll never forget this,” she said to the room.
She wasn't just reclaiming her life; she was purging a sickness. As Noelle and Cynthia began stuffing their clothes into cheap plastic bags, crying and shouting, Madeline stood by the window and watched, feeling the first true sensation of peace she had felt in years.
