Chapter 6 - The Medical Odyssey

The true challenge began after the legal victory. Liam was still struggling. The trauma of the last two years had left deep, invisible scars. He had developmental delays, a fear of closed doors, and a terror of his father's voice.
Madeline took him to a specialized facility in California, a place known for pediatric trauma recovery. For months, their lives were defined by therapy sessions, sensory integration, and the slow, painful process of rebuilding a child's trust in the world.
“He needs to know he’s safe, Maddy,” the lead psychologist told her one afternoon, watching Liam play with blocks, finally building a tower instead of knocking it over. “He was conditioned to believe that movement, noise, and hunger were his natural state. It takes time to un-condition that.”
Madeline worked harder than she ever had in her life. She stopped focusing on the business world, stopped checking the stock market, and dedicated every waking hour to Liam. She read to him, she sang to him, and she learned to speak his silent language.
One evening, nearly six months into their stay, Liam crawled onto Madeline’s lap, looked at her for a long time, and whispered, “Mommy... stay?”

Madeline held him so tight she feared she might break him, tears streaming down her face. “I’m staying, Liam. I’m never, ever going anywhere again.”
It was the first breakthrough. The first sign that the nightmare was beginning to fade.
