Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Ambush
Two weeks later, the annual shareholder meeting of the corporation took place. Jeffrey walked into the boardroom feeling confident. He had prepared a slick presentation on the expansion project, intending to gloss over the "personal drama" with a generous dividend announcement.
But when he opened the door, he didn't see his board of directors sitting in their usual positions of idle comfort.
They were stone-faced. And sitting at the head of the table, in the seat Jeffrey always occupied, was Madeline.
She was wearing a sharp, charcoal-gray suit, her hair pulled back into a perfect bun. Beside her sat the corporate auditor and the legal counsel.
“Madeline?” Jeffrey stammered, his pulse hammering in his ears. “What is the meaning of this? This is an executive board meeting.”
“Actually,” Madeline said, her voice echoing in the silent, wood-paneled room, “it’s a disciplinary hearing. Please, Jeffrey, sit down. We have a lot of audio to get through.”
The board watched as the recording played. They heard the callousness of Jeffrey’s mother, the vulgarity of his mistress, and the chilling indifference of the man they had trusted to run a billion-dollar company.
When the audio ended, the room was so silent you could hear the air conditioning hum.
“The clause is quite clear, Jeffrey,” Madeline said, sliding a document across the table. “You have engaged in gross misconduct, financial negligence, and behavior that reflects poorly on the corporate brand. Per the contract you signed, your shares are being liquidated effective immediately. You are fired.”
Jeffrey’s face turned an ugly, mottled purple. “You can’t do this! I built this company!”

“You built nothing,” Madeline retorted. “You were the face. I was the architect. And tonight, the building is being torn down.”
He tried to protest, but the board members didn't even look at him. They were already discussing the interim CEO position. Jeffrey walked out of that room not as a titan of industry, but as a man who had suddenly realized he was standing on air.
