Chapter 10 - THE HAPPY CAKE
Three years later.
It was a warm, golden Saturday afternoon in Connecticut.
The grand mansion, once cold, silent, and devoid of life, was filled with the chaotic, joyful sounds of a thriving family.
Out on the back lawn, a brand-new wooden playground had been built, complete with swings, a slide, and a sandbox. Six-year-old Sofia, now a top student at St. Jude Academy, was running through the grass, chasing a golden retriever puppy that Ethan had surprised her with for her birthday.
Near the patio, sitting in a wooden rocker, was Maria. She looked radiant, holding a four-month-old baby boy wrapped in a soft blue blanket—their son, Daniel.
Ethan walked out onto the stone patio carrying a tray with four plates and a freshly baked, slightly lumpy chocolate cake decorated with an absurd amount of multi-colored sprinkles.
"Is the cake ready?" Sofia yelled, sprinting across the lawn, the puppy barking excitedly at her heels.
"Ready and fresh out of the oven!" Ethan laughed, setting the tray down on the outdoor table.
Sofia ran up to the table, hopping onto a chair, her dark curls bouncing just as they had four years ago. She looked at the cake, then up at Ethan, and finally at her mother holding baby Daniel.
"Does it taste like yum, Daddy?" Sofia asked proudly.
Ethan’s heart swelled with a happiness so profound it brought tears to his eyes. Hearing her call him "Daddy" over the past two years was a gift he treasured every single day.
Ethan dropped to one knee beside her chair, wrapping one arm around Sofia’s shoulders while leaning over to press a soft kiss against Maria’s forehead. He looked at his wife, his daughter, and his newborn son, knowing with absolute certainty that his heart was completely, permanently healed.
"It tastes like the best thing in the world, princess," Ethan smiled, handing her a plastic fork. "Because it’s a happy cake."
