Chapter 8 - A PUBLIC DECLARATION

Three days later, the grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel in Manhattan was filled with over five hundred guests for the annual Cole Freight Children’s Foundation Gala—the premier philanthropic event of the New York social season.

Every major news outlet, socialite, corporate executive, and photographer in the tri-state area was in attendance.

Maria sat at a private table near the back of the ballroom, feeling entirely out of place in a breathtaking, dark emerald silk evening gown that Ethan had delivered to her room that morning. Sofia sat beside her in a tiny white dress, happily coloring in a book while sipping apple juice from a champagne flute.

Maria had tried to decline attending, but Ethan had insisted, stating that as the head of his domestic staff, she was an honored guest of the foundation.

On the main stage, the orchestra finished playing, and the bright spotlights focused on the podium.

Ethan Cole stepped up to the microphone.

He wore a pristine black tuxedo. The entire room went dead silent as the charismatic billionaire prepared to speak.

"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen," Ethan began, his voice resonant and commanding. "Thank you for joining us tonight to support pediatric healthcare initiatives across the country."

Applause echoed through the grand room.

"For the past three years," Ethan continued, looking out over the crowd, "many of you knew me as a man who withdrew from the world. When I lost my wife, Rachel, I thought my life was effectively over. I hid behind my business, and I built walls so high that no one could reach me."

Maria watched from the back row, her heart beating frantically against her ribs.

"A few weeks ago," Ethan said, his eyes scanning the room until they locked directly onto Maria, "a malicious rumor was published about my private life. People accused a wonderful woman of taking advantage of my grief. They called her an opportunist. They tried to drag her name through the mud."

Murmurs rippled through the high-society crowd. Reporters leaned forward, pencils poised.

"I stand before you tonight to set the record straight," Ethan declared, his voice ringing with fierce, absolute authority. "The woman they wrote about is Maria Alvarez. And far from taking advantage of me... she saved my life."

Ethan stepped away from the podium, holding the microphone in his hand as he walked down the steps of the stage, walking right down the center aisle of the ballroom toward the back table.

The cameras followed his every move.

Maria gasped, her hands trembling in her lap as Ethan stopped right beside her table.

"Maria," Ethan said softly, speaking into the microphone so the entire ballroom could hear. "You asked me if I was just using you to stop hurting. You asked me if I was looking for a replacement for what I lost."

Ethan dropped to one knee on the carpeted floor right beside her chair.

The room gasped collectively. Camera flashes began going off like strobe lights.

"Rachel will always have a sacred place in my past," Ethan said, looking directly into Maria’s tear-filled brown eyes. "But you, Maria Alvarez, are my present and my future. I don't love you because of what I lost. I love you because of who you are. I love your strength, your kindness, your fierce devotion to your daughter, and the way you make this world bright again."

Ethan pulled a small blue velvet box from his tuxedo pocket and opened it. Inside was not Rachel’s ring, but a brand-new, breathtaking oval-cut canary diamond set in platinum—a ring designed specifically for her.

"Maria," Ethan whispered into the microphone, his eyes shining with pure devotion. "I don't want you to be my housekeeper. I want you to be my partner. I want to build a life with you and Sofia. Will you marry me?"

Maria covered her mouth, tears of overwhelming joy streaming down her cheeks. She looked down at the man who had faced down empires and press scandals just to stand before her with an open heart.

Beside them, little Sofia tugged on Ethan’s tuxedo jacket. "Say yes, Mommy! Then we get more happy cake!"

The entire ballroom erupted into warm laughter and thunderous applause.

Maria wiped her tears and smiled—a radiant, beautiful smile that lit up the entire room.

"Yes, Ethan," Maria wept happily, reaching out to embrace him. "Yes, I will marry you!"

Ethan slipped the diamond ring onto her finger and pulled her into his arms, kissing her deeply as the ballroom erupted into a standing ovation.
