With Vance Sterling exposed and arrested by federal authorities, the media narrative surrounding Ethan Cole flipped completely within forty-eight hours.
The Wall Street Journal published a sweeping retraction, praising Ethan’s brilliant corporate sting operation and highlighting Cole Freight's record-breaking quarterly revenue projections.
Yet, despite the victory, Ethan found that his priorities had permanently shifted.
He no longer derived satisfaction from sitting alone in his glass office overlooking Manhattan. Every afternoon, as four o'clock approached, his mind drifted away from shipping manifests and stock quotes, wandering back to the quiet mansion in Connecticut—to the smell of home-cooked food, the sound of Sofia’s laughter, and the gentle, reassuring smile of Maria.
However, a new drama was brewing.
The public attention surrounding the scandal had thrust Maria Alvarez into the national spotlight. Tabloids, eager for clickbait, began digging into her past. Reporters staked out her old neighborhood in Queens, interviewing former acquaintances and painting sensationalized, untrue stories about how a "broke widow maneuvered her way into a billionaire's estate."
One Friday afternoon, Ethan returned home early to find Maria sitting on the outdoor patio, looking out over the manicured gardens. Sofia was taking a nap upstairs.
Maria was holding a tabloid magazine in her lap, her eyes red and swollen from crying.
Ethan walked out onto the stone patio, his heart sinking as he saw her distress. "Maria? What's wrong?"
Maria quickly wiped her tears, trying to hide the magazine behind her back. "Nothing, Ethan. I'm fine."
Ethan gently sat in the wicker chair beside her and took the magazine from her hands. On the cover was a large photograph of Maria leaving a grocery store, accompanied by a cruel headline: "THE BILLIONAIRE’S GOLD-DIGGING HOUSEKEEPER: INSIDE THE SCHEME."
Ethan’s jaw tightened in sudden, violent anger. "This is disgusting. I'm going to have my legal team sue this publication into bankruptcy by tomorrow morning."
"No, Ethan, please," Maria pleaded, her voice cracking with humiliation. "Suing them will only keep the story in the news longer. Don't you see? As long as I stay here... as long as I work here, people are going to say these things. They're going to call me a opportunist, and they're going to look at Sofia like she doesn't belong."
Ethan looked at her, his voice tender. "Do you care what strangers think, Maria?"
"I don't care about myself, Ethan!" Maria said, standing up, her emotions overflowing. "I care about you! You just got your company back! Your reputation is restored! If people think you're having an improper relationship with your housekeeper, it will hurt you all over again. And... and I care about Sofia! She doesn't deserve to grow up with people whispering that her mother used a grieving man!"
Maria walked to the edge of the patio, wrapping her arms around herself against the cool afternoon breeze.
"I think... I think Sofia and I need to move out," Maria whispered, her voice breaking. "I need to find another job."
Ethan felt a sudden, sharp coldness flood his chest—a terror far worse than anything Vance Sterling had ever threatened. The thought of walking into this house and finding it empty again, silent again, devoid of Maria’s warmth and Sofia’s joy, was completely unbearable.
He stood up and walked over to her, stopping right behind her.
"Maria," Ethan said softly. "You can't leave."
"Ethan, please don't make this harder—"
"I'm not letting you leave because of lies written by cruel people," Ethan said, reaching out to gently take her by the shoulders, turning her around to face him. "And you aren't just my housekeeper anymore, Maria. You haven't been for a long time."
Maria looked up into his dark, searching eyes, her breath catching in her throat.
"Then what am I, Ethan?" she whispered.
