Chapter 9 - HEALING THE PAST

Six months later.

The morning sun shone brightly over a picturesque coastal town in Maine.

A small, historic chapel sitting on a cliff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean was decorated with simple white roses and eucalyptus leaves. It was not a lavish, thousand-guest corporate spectacle, but an intimate gathering of twenty close friends, family, and loyal supporters—including Arthur Pendelton and Ethan’s executive assistant, Sarah.

Inside the chapel’s waiting room, Ethan stood before a full-length mirror, adjusting his tie.

The door opened softly, and Arthur stepped inside.

"Five minutes, Ethan," Arthur smiled warmly. "The minister is ready."

"Thanks, Arthur," Ethan said, taking a deep breath.

"How are you feeling?" Arthur asked gently.

"I've never been more certain of anything in my life," Ethan replied truthfully.

Before stepping into the sanctuary, Ethan took a small wooden box from his coat pocket. He walked over to the chapel’s private garden entrance overlooking the sea.

Inside the box were two items: his old wedding band from his marriage to Rachel, and the small, chocolate-stained piece of paper where Sofia had drawn a cat on the day they first baked cake together.

Ethan stood at the edge of the cliff, the cool sea breeze rustling his hair. He looked up at the blue sky, feeling a profound, comforting sense of closure.

"Thank you, Rachel," Ethan whispered to the wind. "Thank you for the love we had. I'm going to be happy now. I know that's what you always wanted."

He didn't throw the ring into the ocean; instead, he placed the box inside a small memorial alcove built into the stone wall of the chapel, honoring the past while stepping fully into his new life.

A moment later, the organ music began to play.

Ethan walked down the aisle of the chapel, taking his place beside the minister.

The heavy wooden doors at the back of the chapel opened.

First came little Sofia, dressed as the flower girl in a pale pink dress, carrying a basket of rose petals. She walked down the aisle with immense pride, dropping petals on the floor and grinning broadly when she saw Ethan standing at the altar.

And then came Maria.

She was breathtaking. She wore an elegant, off-the-shoulder lace wedding gown that flowed gently around her frame. She held a bouquet of white peonies, her dark hair styled in soft waves adorned with small pearls.

As she walked down the aisle toward him, her eyes locked onto Ethan’s, shining with an unconditional love that cleared away every remaining shadow of the past.

Ethan reached out and took her hand as she reached the altar, leaning in to whisper softly, "You take my breath away."

"You built this home for us, Ethan," Maria whispered back, squeezing his hand tightly.

The minister smiled, opening his book. "Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to unite two hearts, two families, and two lives into one..."
