Chapter 4 - THE AMBUSH

The headlines exploded across the financial news networks within hours:
"COLE FREIGHT CEO MENTAL HEALTH IN QUESTION AHEAD OF HISTORIC IPO" "INSIDERS CLAIM ETHAN COLE UNFIT TO LEAD MULTI-BILLION DOLLAR FREIGHT GIANT"
By seven o'clock the following morning, the long driveway of Ethan’s Connecticut estate was swarming with news vans, paparazzi, and eager reporters holding microphones.
Inside the house, the blinds were drawn tight.
Ethan stood in his study, wearing a sharp navy suit, staring at the muted television screen. On the screen, financial analysts were debating his competency, showing old footage of his devastated face at Rachel’s funeral alongside recent grainy paparazzi shots of Maria and Sofia playing in his yard.
"They're calling Maria my 'secret mistress,'" Ethan said, his voice deadly quiet as he spoke to Arthur Pendelton on the speakerphone. "They're dragging an innocent woman and a three-year-old child into a corporate smear campaign!"
"Vance played dirty, Ethan," Arthur responded grimly from Manhattan. "He manipulated the narrative. He's painting you as a grieving, erratic billionaire who has abandoned his fiduciary responsibilities to play family with his domestic staff. The stock value of our private shares plummeted twelve percent in off-market trading this morning."
"Where is Vance now?" Ethan demanded, his dark eyes flashing with the cold, dangerous intelligence that had built his company.
"He’s called an emergency board meeting for ten o'clock today at corporate headquarters," Arthur revealed. "He intends to call for an immediate vote to remove you as CEO and appoint himself interim chairman. If you don't show up and prove you're in total control, the board will vote with him out of fear."
Ethan took a deep, steadying breath. For three years, he had operated in a fog, allowing men like Vance to mistake his grief for weakness. But Vance had made a fatal error: he had threatened the people Ethan was beginning to care about.
"I’ll be there at ten, Arthur," Ethan said coldly. "Tell the board to bring their legal council."
Ethan hung up the phone and walked out into the foyer.
Maria was standing near the bottom of the stairs, clutching Sofia’s hand. She looked terrified, having seen the news vans gathered at the front gate.
"Ethan..." Maria whispered, her voice trembling. "I saw the news. They're saying horrible things about you... about us. They called me... they said I was taking advantage of your grief. I should take Sofia and leave. I don't want to bring scandal to your company—"
"Maria, look at me," Ethan commanded softly, stepping up to her and taking both her hands in his.
She looked up, her brown eyes wide with anxiety.
"You have done nothing wrong," Ethan said with absolute certainty. "You brought light back into this house when I was drowning in the dark. Vance Sterling is a coward who thinks he can use my tragedy to steal what I built. I am going to Manhattan today to end this."
Sofia reached out and grabbed Ethan’s jacket sleeve. "Are you going to fight the bad guys, Mr. Cole?"
Ethan dropped to one knee, offering Sofia a reassuring smile. "I'm going to put them in time-out, princess."
Sofia grinned, satisfied with the answer.
Ethan stood up and looked into Maria’s eyes. "Stay inside the house. My security team is at the gate clearing the reporters. I will be back by afternoon, and when I return, this will all be over."

"Be careful, Ethan," Maria murmured, stepping close and briefly pressing her hand against his cheek.
The brief touch sent a jolt of warmth straight to Ethan’s heart. He nodded, turned, and strode out the front door into the waiting armored town car.
