Chapter 2 - The Silent Alarm

The morning of December 26th began with a deceptively quiet snow falling over the affluent gated community of Whispering Pines, where Frank Henderson’s five-bedroom estate sat.
At 7:55 a.m., Isabella was sitting in her father’s expansive kitchen, sipping an espresso. She had spent the night at her parents' house, feeling a sense of absolute triumph. She had finally severed her ties with Nicholas, the embarrassing handyman. She was already visualizing the alimony payments. Even if Nicholas didn't have much, she would strip him of his house and his tools just to prove a point.
Frank walked into the kitchen, wearing a silk robe, holding his iPad. "Isabella, darling, you did the right thing last night," he said, pouring himself coffee. "A woman of your caliber shouldn't be tied to a man who smells like grease and plaster. We'll find you a real partner. Someone from the country club."
"I know, Dad," Isabella smiled. "I just feel so light today. And Mackenzie... I'm glad she's gone. She was always a reminder of his pathetic past."
Suddenly, Frank’s iPad beeped. It was a high-priority, system-wide notification from Vanguard Asset Management's corporate server.
At the exact same moment, Isabella’s phone chimed. Then, from the hallway, her mother Susan’s phone began to ring. Upstairs, her brothers Julian and Marcus, who were staying over for the holidays, could be heard shouting.
"What is this?" Frank muttered, squinting at his screen. "An email from the board of directors?"
He tapped the notification. The subject line read: IMMEDIATE TERMINATION OF SERVICES & DISSOLUTION OF VANGUARD ASSET MANAGEMENT.
Frank read the words aloud, his voice growing higher and tighter with every syllable:
"Dear Mr. Henderson, we regret to inform you that effective December 26th, at 8:00 a.m. EST, Vanguard Asset Management has officially ceased operations. Your position as Senior Vice President has been terminated. All corporate benefits, including health insurance, vehicle leases, and expense accounts, are null and void as of this hour. Please return all company-owned property to the Apex Property Solutions headquarters within forty-eight hours."
"This... this is a joke," Frank gasped, his face turning an ashen gray. "A corporate restructuring? Without consulting me? I'm the Senior VP!"
Julian ran into the kitchen, clad in pajamas, holding his phone. "Dad! My corporate card was just declined when I tried to pay for my ski trip booking! I got a text saying the account was closed by the primary owner!"
Marcus followed closely behind, his face pale. "My BMW's GPS just flashed a notification. It says the vehicle has been reported as an unauthorized lease-hold and is scheduled for remote locking and towing by Apex Fleet Services!"
"Apex?" Isabella asked, her brow furrowing. "Why would Apex Property Solutions be repossessing your cars? That's just a local maintenance firm, isn't it? Don't you guys work for Vanguard?"
"Vanguard is a subsidiary of Apex!" Frank yelled, his hands shaking as he tried to call his regional director. "But who cares about that—who is the majority shareholder of Apex? We've never met him! He lives in the penthouse downtown! Why would he do this on Christmas?"
Before anyone could answer, the front doorbell rang.

Susan opened it to find a courier in a crisp black uniform holding a massive stack of certified envelopes.
"Forty-seven delivery confirmations for the Henderson residence and associated parties," the courier said politely. "Please sign here."
