Chapter 3 - The Gathering of the Ruined

By noon, the Henderson estate had transformed into a war room of panic.

Forty-seven relatives had descended upon Frank's living room. Aunts were weeping; cousins were arguing loudly; uncles were frantically calling their banks. The luxury cars parked in the driveway had indeed been towed away, leaving wet, empty tire marks in the snow.

"We are ruined!" Aunt Clara wailed, clutching her husband's arm. "Our mortgage payment is due next week! How can they dissolve a multi-million dollar firm overnight?"

"It’s illegal!" Julian shouted, pacing the room. "We have contracts! We can sue!"

Frank sat at the head of the dining table, looking ten years older. He had finally managed to get through to a junior HR representative at Apex Property Solutions after hours of being put on hold.

"The representative said the dissolution was ordered directly by the sole proprietor of Apex," Frank announced to the silent, terrified room. "They said it was a non-negotiable executive decision. No severance. They cited a clause in our contracts regarding 'discretionary corporate wind-down' that we all signed years ago without reading."

"Who is the owner, Frank?" Susan pleaded, her voice trembling. "Can't you call him? You've been with the company for seven years! You must have his contact info!"

"I’ve never met him," Frank muttered, staring at his hands. "He always communicated through his attorneys. His name is listed on the original corporate charter as N. Vance. That’s all we know."

Isabella, who had been sitting quietly in the corner, felt a strange, cold knot form in her stomach.

N. Vance.

Nicholas’s full legal name was Nicholas Vance. But she instantly dismissed the thought. No. That’s impossible. Nicholas is a handyman. He drives a rusted Ford F-150. He cleans gutters and fixes toilets. He doesn't own a $16.9 million commercial empire.

"We need to go to the headquarters," Marcus suggested, his voice desperate. "If we show up in person, forty-seven of us, they can't ignore us. We demand to see this N. Vance face-to-face. We demand our jobs back!"

"Yes!" the crowd roared in agreement.

"Isabella," Frank said, turning to his daughter. "You come with us. You're a Henderson. We stand together. We will show this corporate coward that he can't destroy our family on a whim."

"I'll come," Isabella said, though her heart was pounding for a reason she couldn't quite explain. She pulled out her phone and tried to call Nicholas, wanting to vent her anger about the stress her family was under.

Her call went straight to voicemail.

“Hi, you’ve reached Nicholas. I’m currently unavailable to take your call because I am finally cleaning up the trash. Leave a message.”

Isabella stared at her phone, a sudden, terrifying chill running down her spine.
