Chapter 8 - The Price of Pride

While my life was moving forward, the Hendersons were rapidly unraveling.
In late February, Frank Henderson’s Whispering Pines home was officially listed for auction. Isabella had been forced to move into a modest two-bedroom apartment with her mother, Susan, while Frank moved in with Julian. The family that had once looked down on the entire world was now the gossip of the local country club they could no longer afford to belong to.
One evening, as I was leaving the Apex corporate office, I saw Isabella standing near the parking garage entrance. She looked tired, her designer coat looking slightly frayed, her face pale under the streetlights.
"Nicholas," she called out, stepping into my path.
I stopped, keeping my distance. "Isabella. What are you doing here?"
"I wanted to see you," she said, her voice lacking any of its former venom. "I wanted to say... I'm sorry. For how we treated Mackenzie. For how my father acted."
"Are you sorry, Isabella? Or are you just broke?" I asked flatly.
She flinched, looking down at her boots. "That's not fair. I did love you, Nicholas. In the beginning, before my family got into my head."
"In the beginning, you knew who I was, and your first instinct was to hide me," I reminded her. "You let your family humiliate your husband for eight years because you were ashamed of a lifestyle you thought was beneath them. You wanted the money, but you didn't want the man who actually worked to build it."
"Can we just... can we try again?" she pleaded, taking a step closer. "Just a dinner. No family. Just you and me."

"My lawyers sent the final divorce decree to your attorney this morning, Isabella," I said gently but firmly. "It's over. I wish you the best, but my future doesn't have room for you anymore."
I walked past her, getting into my new, clean truck. As I drove away, I looked in the rearview mirror. Isabella was standing alone under the streetlight, a small, fading figure of a life I had finally left behind.
