Chapter 7 - A New Beginning

Two weeks later, the divorce proceedings were moving at lightning speed. Isabella’s lawyers had tried to challenge the prenuptial agreement, but once they realized they were up against the top corporate defense firm in the state—personally retained by Apex Property Solutions—they quickly advised her to settle.

Isabella was left with her father’s crumbling estate, which was now facing foreclosure. Without his $245,000 salary, Frank couldn't afford the property taxes, let alone the mortgage. Julian and Marcus were forced to take entry-level jobs at local hardware stores, their luxury lifestyles completely gone.

Meanwhile, Mackenzie and I moved out of our suburban home and into a beautiful, spacious penthouse overlooking the river. It was a place filled with light, far away from the judgmental eyes of Whispering Pines.

On a crisp January afternoon, I sat in Mackenzie’s new room, helping her assemble a massive oak bookshelf she had chosen.

"Thanks, Dad," she said, handing me a wooden dowel. "For everything. For standing up for me."

"I should have done it sooner, sweetie," I said, looking at her with a gentle smile. "I let them treat us like that because I thought I was keeping the peace. But peace isn't worth your dignity."

"I like it better this way," Mackenzie said, sitting on the floor and organizing her books. "We don't have to pretend anymore. You don't have to wear those old boots if you don't want to."

"Actually," I laughed, pointing to my dusty boots sitting by the door. "I still like the boots. They remind me of where I started. But now, I only wear them when I want to, not because someone is forcing me to hide."

The doorbell rang.

I walked out to the hallway and opened the door. Standing there was Clara, a local community organizer I had met through some of Apex’s charitable maintenance projects. She was a warm, bright woman who had always treated me with kindness back when she thought I was just a volunteer repairman.

"Nicholas!" Clara smiled, handing me a folder. "I brought the blueprints for the new youth shelter. We're ready to start the renovation, but we need your team's expertise."

"Come on in, Clara," I said, gesturing to the living room. "Let's take a look."
