Chapter 9 - The Foundation of Hope

Spring arrived, bringing green leaves and warm air to the city.
With the Vanguard assets fully dissolved and liquidated, I officially launched the Mackenzie Vance Foundation. The organization was dedicated to providing vocational training, housing support, and educational scholarships to young people who had faced adversity or experienced housing instability.
Mackenzie was heavily involved in the foundation, helping to select the scholarship recipients and participating in the community outreach events. She had blossomed, her confidence soaring as she realized her own worth and potential.
At the grand opening of our first youth shelter, the local media had gathered to cover the event.
I stood on the stage, looking out at the crowd. Clara was there, smiling warmly, along with dozens of community members and Apex employees who had volunteered their time to build the shelter.
"This foundation is built on a simple principle," I said into the microphone. "That every person, no matter where they start or what they wear, deserves to be treated with dignity and respect. We don't build communities by looking down on people. We build them by lifting each other up."
The crowd erupted in applause.
As I stepped down from the stage, Mackenzie ran up and threw her arms around me. "I'm so proud of you, Dad."
"I'm proud of you too, kiddo," I said, hugging her tightly.

Clara walked over, holding two glasses of sparkling apple cider. "A toast," she said, smiling. "To new beginnings, and to the best handyman-turned-philanthropist in the city."
"I'll drink to that," I laughed, clinking my glass against theirs.
