Chapter 10 - The Poster in the Hall

One year after the wedding.
A quiet, cozy Sunday morning settled over Calder House. The smell of fresh coffee, cinnamon pancakes, and maple syrup drifted through the high-ceilinged kitchen.
Elena sat at the long wooden breakfast island, wearing a soft cream sweater, sipping her coffee while reading the morning newspaper.
The front page featured a prominent article about the Calder Foundation’s new ten-million-dollar grant for children's hospitals across Pennsylvania, featuring a photograph of Vincent smiling warmly alongside local doctors.
Heavy, familiar footsteps echoed down the hallway.
Vincent walked into the kitchen, wearing a comfortable dark grey sweater and jeans, holding a small, four-month-old baby boy wrapped in a blue blanket.
"He’s finally awake," Vincent smiled warmly, stepping up to Elena and leaning down to press a tender kiss against her lips before showing her the baby’s cute, sleepy face.
"Good morning, little Leo," Elena cooed softly, reaching out to gently stroke her baby son’s soft dark hair.
Leo let out a tiny, adorable yawn, his grey eyes—identical to his father’s—looking up at his mother with innocent wonder.
"Where’s Sophie?" Vincent asked, setting a soft kiss on Leo’s forehead.
"She’s in the front gallery," Elena smiled, taking a sip of her coffee with a mysterious glint in her eyes. "She said she was finishing her morning inspection."
Vincent raised an eyebrow, a warm chuckle escaping his chest. "Inspection?"
He carried baby Leo down the long, sunlit hallway toward the primary foyer, with Elena walking beside him, her arm wrapped comfortably around his waist.
They stopped at the entrance of the grand gallery.
Standing near the main entrance wall was seven-year-old Sophie, holding her school backpack, looking up at a massive, framed photograph that hung prominently in the center of the wall.
It wasn't a corporate promotional poster anymore.
It was a magnificent, professional family portrait taken on their wedding day. In the photo, Vincent sat in a high leather chair holding a smiling Sophie on his knee, while Elena stood behind him with her arms wrapped around his broad shoulders, all three of them laughing brightly under the afternoon sun.
Beneath the framed photo sat a small, professionally printed silver plaque that read:
PLEASE DO NOT KISS THE BOSS... UNLESS YOU ARE HIS FAMILY.
Sophie turned around, seeing her parents standing in the doorway. She ran over, hugging Vincent’s waist, looking up at her baby brother with a big, proud sisterly smile.
"I checked the picture, Daddy," Sophie announced proudly.
Vincent leaned down, his face full of boundless, infinite love as he looked at his wife, his daughter, and his baby son.
"And what did you find, Sophie?" Vincent asked softly.
Sophie smiled her brightest, most radiant smile, reaching up to gently pat Vincent’s cheek.

"I found out that kissing you really did make you less scary," Sophie giggled happily. "Now you're just our Daddy."
Vincent let out a rich, booming laugh that filled the warm, sunlit house—a laugh that echoed through every room, banishing every shadow of the past, as he pulled his entire family close against his heart, where they would belong forever.
