Chapter 3 - Shadows in the East Gallery

The East Gallery was a long, marble-lined hallway holding the foundation’s historic art collection. It was quieter than the main ballroom, dimly lit, and away from the primary security cameras.

Julian Vance stood against an antique oak display case, holding a heavy leather briefcase. He smelled strongly of scotch, his eyes bloodshot, arguing viciously with two junior security guards.

"I don't care about your protocols!" Vance barked, shoving one guard back. "I am a trustee of this foundation! I go where I want!"

"Mr. Vance," Elena’s voice rang through the gallery as she walked toward him, her heels clicking sharply against the floor.

Frank, Vincent’s towering head of security, walked two paces behind her, his hands folded neutrally in front of his suit.

Vance turned, his drunken rage shifting into a sinister, arrogant sneer as he took in Elena’s red dress and the diamond necklace resting on her collarbone.

"Ah, the little clerk," Vance spat, leaning heavily against the display case. "Wearing Calder’s mother's diamonds, I see. Did you sleep with him to get the director's title, or did you just use your daughter as bait?"

Frank took a sudden, aggressive step forward, his knuckles turning white, but Elena raised her hand, stopping him.

"You're drunk, Julian," Elena said, her voice completely devoid of fear. "And you're trespassing in a restricted section of the estate. Hand the briefcase to Frank for inspection, or I will have you escorted off the property by local police."

Vance laughed—a wet, desperate sound. "Local police? You think Vincent Calder cares about the police? You have no idea what kind of house you're standing in, girl! You think Vincent is a hero because he throws a charity gala once a year?!"

Vance took a step closer, lowering his voice into a venomous hiss.

"Vincent Calder is a murderer. Nine years ago, he wiped out an entire faction in Philadelphia. And right now... he’s using this foundation to launder twenty million dollars in unregistered bonds through offshore accounts."

Elena felt a cold chill run down her spine, but she kept her face completely impassive. "You're lying."

"Am I?" Vance sneered, tapping the leather briefcase. "Everything is right in here. Audit reports, bank transfers, fake invoices. I was going to use this to force the board to oust him tonight. But if you want to play his little mistress... you can burn with him!"

Vance suddenly reached into his coat pocket, pulling out a small brass flash drive, throwing it onto the marble floor at Elena’s feet.

"Look at the files yourself, Ms. Brooks!" Vance yelled as Frank grabbed him by the arms, pinning the heavy man against the wall. "See what kind of monster you're letting around your daughter!"

"Get him out of here," Elena ordered Frank quietly. "Put him in a private room until the gala ends, then hand him over to Mr. Calder."

Frank dragged the shouting Vance down the corridor.

Elena stood alone in the quiet gallery.

She looked down at the tiny brass flash drive resting on the polished floor.

Her heart hammered against her ribs like a trapped bird. For two years, she had heard the rumors about Vincent Calder. She knew who he was. She knew the power he held. But over the past three days, she had seen a side of him that was tender, protective, and intensely human—a man who laughed at a little girl’s joke and stood up to corrupt donors for a junior employee.

Slowly, Elena knelt down in her red velvet dress, picking up the cold metal drive.
