Chapter 2 - The Red Velvet Dress

The night of the Calder Foundation Scholarship Gala arrived like a tidal wave of light, gold, and classical music.
By 7:00 PM, the grand marble courtyard of Calder House was filled with sleek black limousines, flashbulbs, and Pittsburgh’s absolute elite. High-society heiresses in diamond neck-pieces, powerful politicians, and shadowy corporate bosses walked up the red carpet, greeted by live violinists and champagne servers.
Inside the grand ballroom, everything was flawless. The three hundred white hydrangeas from Cleveland bloomed in crystal vases, soft warm lighting bathed the high hand-painted ceilings, and the scholarship families sat in the place of honor right beside the main stage.
In the private staff office off the foyer, Elena stood before a full-length mirror, adjusting the zipper of her dress.
It wasn't a coordinator's uniform.
That morning, a box from a luxury boutique on Fifth Avenue had been delivered to her small apartment. Inside was a floor-length dress of deep red velvet with an elegant off-the-shoulder neckline, accompanied by a small card signed with a simple V.
Elena looked at her reflection. The dress fit as though it had been custom-sculpted to her curves. Her dark hair was swept up in a loose, elegant chignon, her skin glowing under the warm vanity lights.
The office door clicked open.
Elena turned, expecting her assistant.
Vincent Calder stood in the doorway. He wore a tailored black tuxedo that made him look broad, lethal, and devastatingly handsome. His dark eyes swept over her from the crown of her hair down to the hem of her red dress, his breath catching audibly in the quiet room.
"Mr. Calder," Elena whispered, her cheeks flushing. "The dress... it’s too much. I'm staff—"
"You are the woman who brought this house back to life," Vincent said, stepping into the room and closing the door behind him.
He reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out a velvet box. He opened it to reveal a delicate platinum necklace holding a single, brilliant teardrop diamond.
"This belonged to my mother," Vincent said softly, stepping behind her. "She believed that strength should always be rewarded with beauty."
Elena felt the cool metal rest against her collarbone as Vincent gently fastened the clasp behind her neck. His warm fingers brushed against the sensitive skin of her throat, sending a shiver straight down her spine.
She looked at their reflection in the mirror—the dark, imposing crime boss standing close behind the beautiful, resolute woman in red velvet.
"Why are you doing this, Vincent?" Elena asked, her voice barely above a breath. "Two weeks ago, you didn't even know my name."
Vincent rested his hands lightly on her waist, his touch surprisingly gentle for a man whose hands were built for violence.
"Two weeks ago, I was living in a dark, silent fortress, surrounded by men who only feared me," Vincent murmured into the shell of her ear. "Then your daughter kissed a piece of cardboard, and you looked at me like I was a man instead of a monster."
Before Elena could answer, a tiny voice piped up from the doorway.
"Mommy! You look like a princess!"
Sophie stood in the hall, wearing a small white party dress, holding a silver tray with a single chocolate cookie.
Vincent immediately released Elena's waist, turning around. The lethal mafia don instantly melted into a man with a faint, genuine smile touching his lips.
"Good evening, Ms. Brooks," Vincent said to the six-year-old. "Are you enjoying the party?"
Sophie marched into the room, looking at Vincent’s tuxedo. "You look less grumpy tonight, Mr. Scary Poster."
Elena gasped. "Sophie!"
Vincent actually chuckled, kneeling down on one knee in his thousand-dollar suit so he was eye-level with the little girl.
"I have a secret, Sophie," Vincent whispered conspiratorially.
Sophie leaned in, intrigued. "What?"
"I’m less grumpy because your mother is in charge," Vincent said, looking up at Elena with an intense, burning gaze.
Sophie nodded solemnly. "Yeah. Mommy fixes everything."
Suddenly, the earpiece inside Elena’s radio chimed with frantic static.
"Elena! We have a situation in the East Gallery! Julian Vance is drunk, and he’s refusing to let the security detail check his private briefcase!"
Elena’s eyes hardened. Her professional instincts immediately kicked back in. "I have to handle this."
"I’m coming with you," Vincent said, standing up smoothly.
May you like
"No," Elena placed a gentle hand on his arm, feeling the rock-solid muscle beneath his suit. "This is a foundation event, Vincent. If you handle Julian Vance, it will end in bloodshed. Let me handle it as the director."
Vincent searched her eyes for a second, then gave a single nod. "Take my head of security, Frank, with you. If Vance steps out of line by an inch... give Frank the word."
