Chapter 2 - The Mother's Awakening

By 3:00 a.m., the security alert had been cleared, and a heavy, uneasy quiet returned to the maternity wing of St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital. Noah had been safely moved back to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) under a twenty-four-hour police guard.

Emma sat in a stiff vinyl chair beside her mother’s bed in Room 412. The room was dark, save for the green glow of the heart monitor and the amber light from the streetlamps outside the window.

Laura Collins stirred, a low groan escaping her pale lips. Her eyelids fluttered open, her eyes clouded by the heavy fog of anesthesia and blood loss. She turned her head slowly, her gaze finding Emma’s small silhouette in the dark.

"Emma..." Laura whispered, her voice barely a thread. "Where... where is he? Where is Noah? Is he... did he make it?"

Emma immediately stood up, taking her mother’s cold, IV-lined hand between both of hers. "He’s breathing, Mom. He’s in the special room with the incubators. He’s small, but his heart is strong. I checked his breaths. Forty-two a minute."

Laura let out a ragged, trembling sigh, a single tear cutting through the dried sweat on her cheek. "And Ryan? Where is Ryan? He promised he’d be here when I woke up."

Emma looked down at her mother’s hand. She knew that the truth could shock her mother’s fragile system, but she also knew that a lie would give Ryan the space he needed to crawl back into their lives.

"The police took him away, Mom," Emma said softly, looking directly into her mother’s eyes.

Laura’s heart monitor began to beep at a faster, erratic pace. "The police? Why? Emma, what did he do?"

"He tried to steal Noah’s blood before the doctors could even finish the routine tests," Emma explained, her voice steady despite the tremor in her chin. "He was talking to someone on the phone. He said if Noah wasn't his, Noah would never enter his house. He was going to leave us, Mom. He was going to use the test to throw you and Noah out."

Laura’s breath hitched. She tried to sit up, but the surgical incision across her abdomen flared with pain, forcing her back onto the pillows. "No... no, Ryan wouldn't... he promised me this was a fresh start. He said the past didn't matter."

"He lied, Mom," Emma said, reaching into her backpack and pulling out a small, crumpled piece of notebook paper. "While you were asleep yesterday, before the labor started, I found this in his briefcase. It’s an eviction warning for our house. He hasn't paid the mortgage in four months. He took the money you gave him from Dad's life insurance policy and put it into a private account under his own name."

Laura stared at the paper, the harsh reality of her marriage crashing down on her like a tidal wave. The man she had trusted to protect her fatherless daughter and her unborn son had spent months preparing their financial execution.
