Chapter 7 - The Cleaning of the Nursery

With Ryan secured in a maximum-security federal detention center without bail, the Collins home began to heal.
David Vance used his legal authority as the reinstated executor of Thomas’s estate to clear the foreclosure notice within forty-eight hours, proving to the bank that the secondary lien had been executed through criminal forgery.
On a warm Saturday afternoon, the house was filled with the sound of laughter and clean, vibrant energy. Nurse Maya Reed had come over during her day off, carrying a massive box of newborn clothes, diapers, and a brand-new, white wicker bassinet lined with soft, organic cotton.
"He’s gaining weight, Laura," Maya said, smiling as she cradled Noah by the living room window. The baby’s cheeks were no longer wrinkled and red; they were soft, full, and his tiny fists were relaxed against his chest. His breaths were steady—a perfect, healthy thirty-eight a minute.
Upstairs, Emma stood in the center of Noah’s nursery. She had spent the morning scraping away the marks where Ryan had dragged the old crib across the floor. She was holding a paintbrush, carefully touching up the blue sky mural she had started months ago.
David Vance walked into the room, holding a small, official-looking white envelope.
"Is that another bad letter?" Emma asked, lowering her paintbrush, her defensive posture returning automatically.
"No, Emma," David said softly, stepping into the room and handing it to her. "This is a letter from the St. Jude’s Educational Trust Administration. We recovered every single dollar Ryan took from your father’s legacy. The trust has been fully restored, with an additional ten percent interest penalty seized from Ryan’s personal vehicle liquidation."

Emma looked down at the letter, her eyes filling with tears that she had held back since that terrifying night in the supply closet. "So... I can still go to the science camp next summer? The one Dad wanted me to go to?"
"You can go anywhere you want, Emma," David said, his voice thick with emotion as he placed a hand gently on her head. "Your father would be so incredibly proud of you. You didn't just save your brother; you saved this entire family."
