Chapter 6 - The Freezing of the Viper

By the following Monday, the financial execution shifted directions.
Ryan Collins sat in the high-backed leather chair of his downtown office, his phone ringing off the hook as his secondary investors frantically tried to pull their capital from his accounts.
"What do you mean the wire transfer was rejected?" Ryan screamed into his desk phone, his fist slamming into the glass blotter. "The Zurich routing path was cleared on Friday!"
The double doors to his private office didn't open; they were pushed aside by federal agents wearing dark blue jackets with the letters IRS-CI printed in bright gold across the back. Leading the march was Special Agent Sarah Jenkins, flanked by David Vance.
"Ryan Collins," Agent Jenkins said, placing a federal seizure warrant directly over his monogrammed desk calendar. "Per an emergency order issued by the United States District Court for the Southern District, all assets, corporate accounts, shell entities, and private holdings registered to your name or the entity Apex Logistics have been placed under an immediate administrative freeze."
Ryan stood up, his face pale, his breath coming in short, ragged gasps. "This is a civil matter! My lawyers are already processing the restructuring!"
"It was a civil matter until forty-eight hours ago, Mr. Collins," David Vance said, leaning over the desk with a cold smile. "Until we decoded the backup drive your stepdaughter retrieved from the house. The ledger shows that you didn't just hide Laura’s life insurance money; you used her identity to launder three million dollars in illegal maritime fuel credits from a sanctioned port in Venezuela."

Agent Jenkins pulled a set of steel handcuffs from her belt. "You are under arrest for federal bank fraud, identity theft, and violation of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. You have the right to remain silent."
As Ryan was led out through the glass-walled lobby of his own firm, his employees stopped and stared, their phones lifted to record the definitive fall of the man who had built his career on the systematic robbery of widows and children.
